Rawlings Prize deadline extended

The Albemarle County Historical Society offers the annual Rawlings Prize for outstanding papers on local history, with this year’s deadline extended to Sept. 1.

The contest is open to faculty (active or retired), alumni and students of U.Va.

Prizes up to $1,000 will be awarded at the society’s November meeting for winning essays on the history of Charlottesville and Albemarle County, on individuals contributing to their history, or on events affecting the local community. All manuscripts will be considered for publication in the Magazine of Albemarle County History.

The judging committee selects winning papers on the basis of originality of the contribution, literary excellence and significance of the contribution to the historical record.

Entries should be mailed to: Rawlings Prize Competition, Albemarle County Historical Society, The McIntire Building, 200 2nd Street NE, Charlottesville, Virginia 22902.

The Albemarle County Historical Society is open to the public Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. For additional information, contact the society at 296-1492.
