Vena Elizabeth Gardner, 95, of Charlottesville, died May 15.
As a volunteer she knitted hundreds of caps and blankets for babies
in the neonatal intensive care unit at the University Medical
Center.
John Francis Jack Hahn, 76, of Columbus, N.C.,
died May 17. He was professor of psychology at the University
from 1952 to 1989 and was named professor emeritus at retirement.
David Jameson Gibson, 86, of Charlottesville, died May
30. He was a lecturer at the School of Architecture during the
1940s and 1950s.
Mary Pattie Joann Moore Tinsley, 66, of Profitt, died May
30. She was a retired licensed practical nurse with 28 years of
service at the U.Va. Medical Center.
Ellen Howard Mundy, 82, of Charlottesville, died June 4.
She had been employed at the radiology department at the Medical
Center.
Doris Jean Van de Castle, 76, of Browns Cove, died
June 12. She had been manager of the Ob/Gyn clinic at the Medical
Center, as well as an administrator in the Primary Care Center.
She had also been president of the U.Va. Employee Council.
Samuel Holt Woodson, 81, died June 14. He retired in 1983
from a career in the Nuclear Medicine Department.
Joseph W. Twinam, 66, a career foreign service officer
and Middle East specialist, died June 12 in Charleston, S.C. An
honors graduate of U.Va., he served as visiting professor and
diplomat-in-residence at the University.
Dorothy Estes Roberts, 93, of Charlottesville, died June
16. She retired in 1974 from the U.Va. hospital after 34 years
of working in housekeeping.
Cristina Washington Sharretts, 60, of Charlottesville,
died June 17. She was an assistant professor of Spanish at U.Va.
and for the past 24 years, she worked in various positions at
the University library, most recently as the librarian with the
Digital Library Research Group, where she was the Coordinator
of the Electronic Theses and Dissertation Project.
T. Woodrow Phillips, 84, of Alberene, died June 29. He had
retired from Facilities Management at the University.
Clara A. Fortune, 76, of Charlottesville, died July 10.
She had retired after 35 years at U.Va.s Research Department.
Sadie Delphia Miller, 42, of Hinton, died July 9. She had
been employed at the University library.
Katherine Buckley Nuckolls, 84, of Newton, Mass.,
died July 16. A retired nurse educator, she was a consultant for
the Universitys Family Nurse Practitioner Program.
Jack Lewis Peyton, 57, of Afton, died July 16. He had worked
for the University for 20 years.
M. Meade Palmer, 85, of Warrenton, died July 16. Palmer
was professor emeritus of landscape architecture at the University,
where he had taught plant identification and planting design for
30 years. Among his landscape design projects were the presidents
house on Carrs Hill and the Boars Head Inn.
Ruth Fields Allen, 81, of Atlantic City, died July 20.
She had been senior executive assistant to the dean of students
until her retirement in 1984.
Carolyn L. Melton, 59, of Charlottesville, died July 23.
She had been employed in the School of Engineerings accounting
department.
Cecil C.H. Cullander, 79, of Stanardsville, died July 26.
A psychiatrist, he joined the faculty as a part-time supervising
analyst from the late 1970s to 2000.
Frank Henry Keyes, 72, of Charlottesville, died July 27.
He was employed by the U.Va. hospital, retiring after 35 years.
Mary Frances Beard Stulting, 84, of Charlottesville, died
July 30. She was a retired nurse at the hospital.
