Hunter to head science, engineering
libraries
Carol Hunter has been appointed director of the science and
engineering libraries, which include Astronomy, Biology/Psychology,
Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, and the Science and Engineering
Library. She assumes her new assignment after working at the University
Library since 1998 as the assistant government information librarian.
Hunters
immediate goals are to continue the tradition and reputation of
excellent customer service that the science and engineering libraries
have, as well as to ensure that they fulfill their role in the
Virginia 2020 mission to attain world-class science and
engineering programs at the University. In the short term,
Hunter will devote much of her energy to the renovation of Clark
Hall (home of the Science and Engineering Library), which will
provide for more technology and much-needed space for collaborative
learning.
Hunter
received her B.A. in 1977 from Rhodes College in Memphis, Tenn.,
and her Masters of Library Science in 1978 from the University
of Alabama. Before coming to the University of Virginia Library,
she was assistant department librarian of archives and manuscripts
at the Birmingham Public Library in Alabama; head of the New York
Region Library of the U.S. Customs Service; and physical, social
science, and engineering librarian at the Missile and Space Intelligence
Center in Huntsville, Ala.
