New Supervisor Orientation Program

New supervisors have the opportunity to learn more about what is expected of them and how to use key University systems in a special orientation program to be held June 10 & 12.

Designed by Human Resources’ Division of Training, the two-day workshop will help familiarize new supervisors with institutional philosophies, goals and processes. Participants will have an opportunity to meet other U.Va. supervisors and resource personnel.

Supervisors need to attend both days — June 10, 8 a.m.- noon, and June 12, 8 a.m.- 5 p.m. June 3 is the deadline to register for the program, which is free of charge. To enroll, contact Deb Meyers at 924-4478 or by e-mail: ddp4x@virginia.edu

Topics that will be covered include:

• the U.Va. context — institutional mission, current issues and trends;

• a discussion of supervisory role contributions and best practices;

• responsibilities around the selection & treatment of employees;

• hiring considerations;

• new employee orientation;

• creating a safe work environment;

• fiscal responsibilities and accountability;

• managing employee performance;

• professional development and training opportunities for supervisors and their staffs.
