U.Va. women’s lacrosse team routs Princeton for national title
It was their turn. One year after watching the Cavalier men’s lacrosse
team win an NCAA
title, and 11 since capturing their last banner in 1993, the U.Va. women’s
lacrosse team routed previously undefeated Princeton on May 23 to win the 2004
national championship. The All-Tournament Team consisted of Caitlin Banks, Elizabeth
Pinney, Nikki Lieb, Amy Appelt and most valuable player Andrea Pfeiffer. (May

Researchers
unlock one of red wine’s secrets
Over the years, there have been many studies linking the
moderate drinking of red wine with some health benefits.
Now researchers
may have discovered an explanation for red wine’s cancer-preventive
qualities: resveratrol, a chemical found in grape skins that
inhibits the growth of cancer cells. (May 27)
Gene can predict prognosis for bladder cancer
The American Cancer Society predicts more than 60,000 new
cases of bladder cancer will occur in the U.S. this year,
resulting in over 12,000 deaths. Researchers in U.Va.’s Health System
have discovered that a gene linked to the spread of cancer can
predict the severity of bladder cancer and the survival rate
of patients with the disease. (June 3) |
