98-12-11:  LOOKING AT VIRGINIA WITH 2020 VISION





President John T. Casteen III's eye toward planning the University's
future has been dubbed VIRGINIA 2020: Agenda for the Third Century. The
new logo for the president's four strategic initiatives -- to boost the
fine and performing arts, science and technology, international
activities and public service and outreach -- depicts the oculus in the
Rotunda Dome Room ceiling.

The year 2020 was chosen because it marks the beginning of U.Va.'s
third century, said project director Denise Karaoli, and it represents
clear vision.

The appointment of members to the four commissions is nearly complete,
and they will begin working in early January.
