Where to get a copy?
Discoverer 10.1.2 can be downloaded from the Research Computing site.

http://www.web.virginia.edu/rescomp/
Its also listed on Software Central under Windows XP Software.

Patch 10.1.2.2
Download the patch here. Caution - its very large - 1.6 Gb.

One-off Patch.
To fix issues with report scheduling that surfaced during testing, a one-off patch needs to beapplied.

Download the ZIP (7Mb) HERE and extract the files into
C:\oracle\BIToolsHome_1 folder. Then run patch2.bat to apply the patch. To verify it has been applied, run opinv.bat. Patch 6161909 should be displayed.

What's differnt with this installation?
The installation is in three parts: application, patch, one-off patch.
Special notes: 1. The patch is huge; 1.6Gb zipped. It is a “super” patch to update all Oracle Business Intelligence tools found on the workstation. If your department accesses Oracle applications other than the Integrated System, careful evaluation of the patch is required. (This does NOT include Oracle Calendar.)
2. Oracle Installer increments the Oracle Home name each time it runs. After the first time through, the Oracle home will have to be typed in or selected from a dropdown list. Do not accept the default value. This step is easily overlooked and causes failures! The default Oracle Home is C:\oracle\BIToolsHome_1.

Are there any gotchas with the installation?
Virtual Memory/ swap space. Some installs error with a Insuffecient Swap Space error. A possible solution is to resize the swap space. Properties of My Computer, Advanced tab, Performance Settings button, Advanced tab, Virtual memory, Change. Setting initial to 1600Mb and Maximum to 3000Mb seems to work. The installer asked for 1535 minimum. Setting it to "System managed size" sometimes works.

Installation seems to hang: Sometimes a window opens behind the currnet window. Check the Taskbar for hidden windows.

Where's the Test Login site?
Test the connectivity by logging into the QA instance. (A new TNSNAMES.ORA is required to connect to isq01.)
In Discoverer,

Username: lsp: (include the colon)
Passwd: welcome2u (verified 10/12/09)
Connect: iods

Error "Failed to connect to database -Unable to connect to Oracle Applications database: invalid username/ password."?
Incorrect password. To verify or set the password, log into the Oracle Applications from http://www.virginia.edu/integratedsystem/. Remember that the password in ODS is from the Oracle Applications on the previous day.

When you choose your Integrated System password, please do not include the characters $ or @. While these are acceptable characters for the Integrated System application, they will cause an error when you try to log in through Discoverer. It interprets the '@' as the beginning of the instance name. A decimal "." will cause failure when using Brio Query.

This may also occur if using the incorrect version, or patch not applied.

Error "Your password has expired"?
If you get the “Your password has expired” notice when logging on to the I.S. applications, you will be unable to log on to Discoverer until the day after you change your password in the I.S. applications. Discoverer will not lock you out unless your system password has expired. It will shutdown, however, after three failed attempts to log on. You will have to reopen Discoverer and try again.

Avoid using $, @, / or \ in your password. It is safest to avoid using any special characters.

This can be the result of an incorrect version. The version should be 10.1.2.2.
Discoverer is distributed on two parts: 10.1.2.0 and a patch to 10.1.2.2.

But I just changed my password!
If a user changes their password today in Oracle applications, that new password won't be in affect in the ODS (using Discoverer) until tomorrow. The old password in the ODS is unchanged until tomorrow.

Why? Each night, a copy of the production database is copied to ODS (Operational Data Store). The passwords go with it. The password in ODS is yesterday's production password. That also applies to password expiration. Discoverer 10g will not allow access with an expired password.

Discoverer will not lock you out unless your system password has expired. It will shutdown, however, after three failed attempts to log on. You will have to reopen Discoverer and try again.

Error "Unable to connect to mst3k:@iODS You do not have access to any End User Layer tables."?
Incorrect/ invalid Oracle responsibility. Users logging into the ODS should use an ODS responsibility, ie UVA ODS Specialist.

This may also occure if the Discoverer Administrator version was installed, instead of Discoverer Desktop version.

Double click on a local copy of a .DIS file opens old Discoverer.
If a user double-clicks on a local copy of a Discoverer report (DIS file type) via Windows Explorer to launch Discoverer and it opens the old version, its a Windows file association problem.

To associate file type DIS with version 10.1:
Windows XP: open Windows Explorer, Tools, Folder Options, File Types tab, click on DIS, click Advanced button, highlight "open" action, Edit, Browse to c:\oracle\BIToolsHome_1\bin\dis51usr.exe, Open, OK, Close.
Windows 2000: open Windows Explorer, Tools, Folder Options, File Types tab, click on DIS, click Change, Other, Browse to c:\oracle\BIToolsHome_1\bin\dis51usr.exe, Open, OK, Close.

Firewalls and the Windows XP Firewall.
Firewalls are designed to restrict internet traffic. Some personal firewalls like ZoneAlarm and BlackIce can be configured to allow connectivity to Oracle systems. If misconfigured, they may block access.

Windows XP has a personal firewall called Windows Firewall. It can restrict access to Oracle Applications. Firewalls should be part of your departments IT security plan.

How do I include Information Warehouse settings?
Information Warehouse settings have already been included in the TNSNAMES.ORA file.

Discoverer report run time notice: Discoverer gives you the option of warning you if a query will run longer than a certain number of minutes that you determine. Under the Tools menu, select Options, then select Query Governor, and see "Warn me if predicted query time exceeds," followed by a box. In version 11i of the Integrated System, the system will try to predict the run time of the query, and if it is longer than the number of minutes in the box, it will ask you if you still want to run the query. If you do not want to be asked this each time you run a query, set the number in the box higher.
