Logon issue: TNSNAMES could not resolve service
name
Using Windows Explorer – navigate to C:\Orant\Net80\Admin
(or C:\Orawin95\Net80\Admin for Windows 98 systems).

Do you have a file named SQLNET.ORA?
YES – Right click on file and rename it “oldsqlnet.ora”
NO – Continue to 2.
- Is there a TNSNAMES_ORA.HTM
file in the folder?
YES – Right click on the file and rename it
to “tnsnames.ora”
NO – Continue to 3.
- Is there a TNSNAMES.ORA file in the folder?
NO – Contact your LSP to download the file
YES – Continue to 4.
- Open up the TNSNAMES.ORA file does it begin
with
“
# www.virginia.edu/integratedsystem 1/16/04”?
NO – Contact your LSP to download the file
YES – Continue to 5.
- Has the user recently changed their Integrated
System password and included
either a “@” or “$” special character in their
password?
NO – create remedy referral to ISDS-Report-Support
YES – They must change their oracle password and avoid using either “@” or “$” character.
They will be locked out of the ODS until the next day.

Unable
to connect to database – ORA-01017:
Invalid Username/password, logon denied
- Did the user enter
a “:” (Colon) after
their user id?
NO – retry with colon after their user id
YES – continue to 2.
- Did they just change their Integrated System
Password?
YES – use their old password today – logon
with new password tomorrow (due to ODS refresh)
NO – Continue to 3.
- Can the user logon to the Integrated System with
the same password?
YES – retry entering user id and password in
Discoverer – perhaps keying error
NO – create remedy referral. (May have to have
DBA reset Production Password so they can go in and
change their password.)
Discoverer Shut
down because failed to get connected after 3 attempts
- Just restart Discoverer 4.1 – no lock
out delay penalty.
Column totals disappear on a detail or Page-detail
report, or whole columns disappear on a Cross-Tab report.
- Create remedy referral.

Unable
to open a user-defined report (either 3.1 or 4.1
that is saved on their local PC, or shared directory,
or even an email attachment).
- Is the user either clicking on the report to launch
Discoverer or clicking on the file from Windows Explorer
to open it in Discoverer?
NO – Create remedy referral.
YES – Direct the user to open Discoverer 4.1; then open the file through
Discoverer.
Unable to connect to odsuser:isq01
You do not have access to any End User Layer tables.
- The user has chosen a non "UVA ODS ..." responsibility.
Have them logon again and choose a "UVA ODS
..." responsibility.
This workbook should be re-saved as changes have
been made to the business area - Please contact your
Discoverer Administrator for assistance.
- This is a warning message. Some things have changed
in the EUL upgrade to 4.1. Your report should run
just fine. Click OK and save teh report as a 4.1
version of the report after it has finished running.

Unable to connect to Oracle Applications database:
your password is expired.
- Their Integrated System password has expired. If
they change it today - they can logon to the ODS
tomorrow.

- Is VPN running? (i.e.; can you log on to the Integrated
System?)
No – Open VPN and log on
Yes – Continue to 2.
- Does your PC have a Windows XP operating system?
(check with your LSP if not sure)
Yes – Windows XP’s internal firewall (ICF) may be preventing
access have your LSP disable the XP firewall.
No - Continue to 3.
- When you logged on to Discoverer 4.1, did you
enter “iODS” into the box labeled “Connect”?
No – Log on to Discoverer 4.1 again and enter “iODS”
Yes – Refer call to the ITC Help Desk.
