The Multicultural Events Calendar highlights events with an international or intercultural focus held at the University and in the Charlottesville/Albemarle community. It is a bi-weekly email produced by The Lorna Sundberg International Center, a unit of U.Va.'s International Studies Office, to promote the diversity of the University and Charlottesville/Albemarle community. All affiliates of the University (students, faculty and staff) and Charlottesville/Albemarle residents are welcome to subscribe and to submit events to the calendar.

Description: Members of the Black Law Students Assocation (BLSA) will start Candlelight Vigil at 5:30PM by reading King's "I Have a Dream" speech. Discussion will begin at 6PM. Michael Cody (Law '61) and Julian Bond (Professor, Corcoran Department of History) will discuss the events of April 3 and 4, 1968, when Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated in Memphis.  Professor Kim Forde-Mazrui will moderate. Reception to follow. .

Zionist Alternatives to a (Jewish) Nation-State

Description:  Zionism's critics and defenders both assume that the Jewish national movement always ultimately aspired to build a sovereign Jewish nation-state. Professor Shumsky of The Hebrew University of Jerusalem will argue, however, that in the decades before 1948, the Zionist political mainstream and radical members of Brit Shalom shared a basic outlook on an autonomist, non-statist interpretation of national self-determination. All the Missing Souls: A Personal History of the War Crimes Tribunals

Description: Professor of law and director of the Center for International Human Rights at Northwestern University School of Law, David Scheffer served as the first U.S. Ambassador-at-Large for War Crimes Issues and led American initiatives on war crimes tribunals during the 1990s.  He is the author of the recent book, All the Missing Souls: A Personal History of the War Crimes Tribunals (http://press.princeton.edu/titles/9520.html). Prof. Scheffer will discuss contemporary issues in war crimes and provide a historical overview of war crimes tribunals. Following the event, Prof. Scheffer will sign copies of his book, which will be available for purchase.

Pollack, director of the Saban Center for Middle East Policy at Brookings is an expert on national security, military affairs and the Persian Gulf.  He was director for Persian Gulf affairs at the National Security Council.  He also spent seven years in the CIA as a Persian guld military analyst.  He is the author of “A Path Out of the Desert: A Grand Strategy for America in the Middle East."

History in the Making: Aboriginal Art of the Twentieth Century

Description: Vernon Ah Kee is a member of the Kuku Yalandji, Waanyi, Yidinjii and Gugu Timithirr peoples. He is known for his unapologetic explorations of contemporary and historical (mis)treatment of Aboriginal people in Australia. His work has been exhibited widely in Australia and internationally, and he represented Australia at the 2009 Venice Biennale. A collection of works by Aboriginal artist Vernon Ah Kee, will celebrate diversity and explore issues of race and discrimination in conjunction with Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday and Black History Month in February.

Volunteer in rural China this summer for libraries and reading education

Description: Dream Corps is recruiting about 65 international volunteers to participate in its 2012 Summer Volunteer Program in rural schools (township elementary or middle schools) and villages of China. Volunteers will take part in activities that include: Establishing and developing libraries: decorations, cataloging books, electronic cataloging system set-ups, and library policy making. Reading programs: “Library Month”, “Reading Aloud”, “Science and Reading”, English Reading, and crafts.
The program consists of 4 days of training in Beijing, 3 weeks of volunteer work on assigned volunteer sites, and 3 days concluding forum in Beijing.

Description: Dialogue Across UVA is an initiative, started in 2010, for University members interested in bringing together more diverse voices across Grounds to discuss issues that shape our University community. Groups of faculty, staff, and students will come together in five biweekly sessions this semester to build relationships across diverse areas of the University and to engage in meaningful conversations about our community on and beyond Grounds.
This spring, dialogue groups (led by trained facilitators) will meet for five biweekly dialogues beginning the week of February 27. Each group will focus on one of the following topics: UVA-Charlottesville relations, power and privilege on Grounds, faith at the University, class, our "community of trust," or student-faculty-staff relations.
