The International Residential College (IRC) is a vibrant, enriching, residential and academic community for undergraduate students, both domestic (60%) and foreign (40%). It is the largest residential college at UVA with over 300 students who interact with world-class Faculty Fellows and US Ambassadors, take trips to explore the area (Monticello, Apalachian Trail, etc.) and host a wide variety of cultural and social events as well as intramural sports.
Welcome to the IRC Video
The IRC is much more than a Residential Hall; it is a Residential College, meaning academics are infused into its social fabric. This concept was envisioned by Thomas Jefferson for UVA at its founding to directly integrate faculty and students in a living and learning environment. The residential college concept is also exemplified by its extensive use in the world's greatest universities, notably Cambridge and Oxford as well as Harvard and Yale. The IRC academical village includes four student residential buildings and one faculty residential building. The IRC further allows students to have a strong global perspective, as recently emphasized by the 2013 UVa strategic plan.
The IRC is a place where over 300 undergraduates develop their intellectual capabilities, their networking skills, and a profound global perspective. While most of the students are from the United States, the IRC boasts having a large international student population, representing 38 countries and including exchange students from partner universities abroad. The IRC also integrates world-class professors and fellows as active members of this "extraordinary community". The faculty interact with students through mentorship meetings as well as through formal Conversazione Grande Dinners at Alumni Hall, an event unique to the IRC. The students also interact with each other through discussion and study groups, which creates a culture of academic excellence. This leads to improved classroom performance as evidenced by the above average of 3.3+ GPA for the IRC. Indeed, IRC students strive to succeed and to share that success with their colleagues.
The IRC is ideally located near the Rotunda, memorial Gymnasium and the Corner and is close walking distance to the John Paul Jones Arena and Barrack's Road Shopping Center. We are located on the corner of Sprigg Lane and Emmett Street, across from the Snyder Tennis Courts and adjacent to Alumni Hall.
