About ULB

The ULB (Université Libre de Bruxelles) was founded in 1834, four years after the birth of the Belgian State.  It is made up of eighteen faculties, schools and institutes, several hospitals, as well as industrial and experimental centers in Brussels and in the region of Walloon.

The ULB is widely involved in several international research and development programs.  Its professors have already been awarded the Nobel Prize three times.

The principle of freedom of investigation underlies teaching and research at the ULB.  Whatever the subject, it advocates the rejection of the argument of authority and the independence of judgment.

Since 1968, out of a concern for democracy, the students have actively participated in the main decision-making processes of the University.  In fact, their representatives are elected to the Board of Directors, to the faculty councils, and to the various committees of the Board.

The City of Brussels

The historical nucleus of the city, the medieval and Renaissance

Grand' Place, a large square, is the site of the Gothic city hall

(15th cent.); the Renaissance-style Maison du Roi or Broodhuis

(13th cent.), meeting place of the old States-General of the

Netherlands; and a number of rebuilt Gothic guildhalls. Near the

Grand Place is the famous fountain of a small boy urinating,

Mannekin-Pis (1619). Other noteworthy buildings include the Collegiate Church of St. Michael and St. Gudule (founded in the 11th cent. and rebuilt in the 13th-15th cent.), which contains many noted Flemish paintings; the Palais de la Nation (parliament building); the Palais de Justice; and the Palais du Roi (royal palace). Brussels is the seat of a university (founded 1834), which in 1970 was divided into two separate institutions, one French-speaking and the other Flemish. There are also excellent art museums and a botanical garden. The rest of Brussels is mostly modern, with contemporary office buildings and broad boulevards that circle the city along its former ramparts.

Housing

For those who do not live in Brussels or the surrounding area, the Central Accommodation Office of the ULB offers a large number of rooms scattered over three campuses (Solbosch, Plaine, Erasme) with prices varying according to style and comfort. Any student who wishes to be allocated a room must complete a form and return it to the University before June 15. The ULB Accommodation Office has a database of private offers of accommodation. There are also two houses of private accommodation, one on the Plaine campus and the other on the Erasme campus.
