Morocco Program Banner

The most current information and application procedures are no longer available on this website.  All current information and application for all study abroad programs are now found through www.studyabroad.virginia.edu

This program is specially designed by UVA faculty to complement UVA curriculum.

This program will allow students to earn UVA credit and UVA grades, not simply transfer credit. Students will have opportunities to take an intensive French language course along with an interdis-ciplinary course on Moroccan civilization which will be supplemented by local guest speakers and field trips. Students will be integrated into the local community and culture.

The program is coordinated and accompanied by a UVA faculty member (Majida Bargach from the French Department) and thus is ideal for students who want to study French language and have never traveled to North Africa. For those students with more knowledge of French language, this program will also provide a deeper immersion in a Franco-phone country in North African civilization and culture.

Students will receive nine UVA credits and grades for completion of this program. These credits can be counted towards major or minor requirements at UVA.

15th Century Tower of Hassan, Rabat

Location
At the crossroads of civilizations, Morocco and its capital city of Rabat are located in the North West corner of Africa, only 10 miles from Europe. The capital of a mod-ern nation, Rabat embodies the variety and contrasts of Morocco. Rabat is an ideal location for experiencing a successfully functioning multilingual society (Arabic, French, and Berber).

The country is surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea on the northern, and the Atlantic Ocean on the western side. The port city Tangier faces the southern most point of Spain just across the Strait of Gibraltar.

Housing
Students will be housed in double occupancy rooms in the Hotel Ibis. This facility offers breakfast as well as other amenities such as in-room television.

Travel
Students will attend classes four days a week (Monday through Thursday), and will participate in group field trips and excursions, including a five day trip to the Sahara desert. Other field trips will include museums and monuments, and expected excursions will include the Imperial Cities: Marrakech and the Atlas mountains, Fes (the cultural capital), Meknes (imperial city), Volubilis (Roman Ruins), Casablanca (the economic capital), and Tangier and Tetouan on the Mediterranean Sea.
