Integrated System
Desktop Requirements

To help you prepare your offices for the University's new Integrated System, which goes live with the financial administrative applications on July 2, 2001, the following describes the operating system requirements for using the Oracle applications.

Windows Version

Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows NT 4 are all certified by Oracle for use with the version of Oracle software (v.11.03) to be implemented July 2, 2001. Windows 2000, the successor to NT 4, is not currently certified for use by Oracle and will not operate the Oracle applications reliably. It is also important to note that the Windows Millennium (ME) operating system is designed for home users and should not be considered an option for use with the Integrated System.

We believe Oracle may complete the certification of Windows 2000 before July 2, 2001, but until we hear that these Microsoft products are working reliably with and are certified by Oracle, users must access the new Integrated System from computers with Windows 98 or NT 4. DELL computers available through the Desktop Computing Initiative will come with Windows 98 and/or NT4 until Oracle certifies Windows 2000.

Macintosh Computers

Apple Computers are also not certified for use with Oracle software version 11.03 and will not operate the Oracle applications reliably. Apple computers are certified for use with a future version (11i) of Oracle, but that version is not yet available to higher education. Therefore, the University will not have a Mac-compatible version until the first Integrated System upgrade, a date for which has not been established.

We recognize that Oracle's current incompatibility with Mac and Windows 2000 may be a hardship for some departments. ITC's Departmental Computing Support Group is available to assist you with assessing its impact and to discuss options to solve your specific issues. To contact them, please call Nancy Hopkins at 804-924-4160 or send email to dept-support@virginia.edu.

If you have questions regarding Oracle, please call Carole Horwitz at 804-924-1627 or email her at chorwitz@virginia.edu.

All Dell DCI computers satisfy minimum requirements. All but the first issue of Dell DCI computers (around May 1999) have 128 MB RAM.

Please see Training Prerequisites for more requirements.
