January Term 2008

The College of Arts and Sciences, Curry School of Education, McIntire School of Commerce, School of Architecture, School of Nursing, and School of Engineering and Applied Sciences offered thirty-two courses in January Term 2008 to over 600 students. Areas of study included Afro-American and African Studies, Anthropology, Architecture, Art History, Biology, Commerce, Drama, Education, Engineering (STS), English, Environmental Sciences, German, History, Interdisciplinary Studies, Mathematics, Music, Nursing, Politics, Public Health Sciences, Religious Studies, Spanish, and Studies in Women and Gender. The dates for January Term 2008 were January 2 – 11. Classes were held on January 2,3,4,7,8,9,10, and 11, 2008.

Eight study abroad programs were offered in January Term 2008. The host countries for the programs were Belize, Germany, Ghana, Ireland, Italy, Nicaragua, and Spain. Dates for January Term 2008 Study Abroad Programs will varied by program. The application process for January Term study abroad programs is managed by the International Studies Office (ISO). The deadline for January Term study abroad program applications was October 1, 2007. Interested students must attend a General Information Session on Study Abroad (GIS) before initiating the application process. General Information Sessions are held Monday - Thursday, 2:00 - 3:00 p.m., in Minor Hall 224 during the fall semester.

January Term 2007

The School of Architecture, College of Arts and Sciences, Curry School of Education, and School of Engineering and Applied Sciences offered thirty-six courses, including eight study abroad programs, in January Term 2007. Courses in Afro-American and African Studies, Anthropology, Architecture (Planning), Art History, Biology, Education, Engineering (STS), English, Environmental Sciences, German, Interdisciplinary Studies, Music, Philosophy, Physics, Politics, Religious Studies, Russian, Sociology, and Spanish were available to J-Term students. Belize, Germany, Ghana, Ireland, Italy, Nicaragua, Spain, and Tanzania were the host countries for the J-Term study abroad programs.


January Term 2006

Thirty courses, including four study abroad programs, were offered in January Term 2006. The number of J-Term courses available to students more than doubled from 2005 to 2006. Four hundred four students enrolled in non study abroad courses in January Term 2006, an increase of 100% from 2005. Participants in J-Term 2006 study abroad courses totaled 97, an increase of 33% from 2005. Thirty-three faculty, twelve graduate instructors, and three undergraduate assistants were employed during January Term 2006.

January Term 2005

Two hundred sixty-six students and twenty-one faculty participated in the University's pilot January Term held earlier this year. Fourteen courses were available including an anthropology research seminar held in Chaco Canyon, New Mexico; two study abroad programs — one in Italy and one in Spain; and courses in politics, environmental science, drama, sociology, anthropology, global health, and English on Grounds in Charlottesville.The response of faculty and students to the pilot program was strongly positive. Most seemed to find the experience engaging, rigorous, and satisfying. One hundred percent of the students who completed an on-line evaluation of their January Term course indicated that the University should continue to offer January Term.
