January Term 2011Nearly eight hundred undergraduate enrolled in J-Term 2011. Courses in anthropology, commerce, drama, education, engineering (STS), environmental science, German studies, history, Italian studies, leadership, public health, mathematics, politics, religious studies, Slavic literature, sociology, South Asian Studies, and Spanish were available to them. One hundred seventy-seven students studied in one of nine overseas programs. New education abroad options were offered in Italy and El Salvador. Other locations included Belize, Ireland, Germany, India, Nicaragua, SE Asia, and St. Kitts and Nevis. Sherrilynn Colby-Bottel returned to Grounds to offer her popular anthropology course Music and Race in the U.S. Visiting scholar Manachem Mor introduced a religious studies course titled Israel Between the Wars. Professor of Environmental Science Stephen Macko taught his first J-Term course, The Captive Ocean, which included visits to aquariums in Baltimore and Atlanta. Other faculty teaching in J-term for the first time were Associate Professor of History Bradley Reed and Professor of Sociology Jeffery Olick. Students in the classes offered by historian Ben Cohen and Associate Professor of Politics Paul Freedman participated in several joint activities, one of which was a visit to Polyface Farms. Fifty students, a J-Term record, enrolled in Research Associate Professor Robert Swap’s Ethics, Protocols, and Practice in International Research. January Term 2010 A record breaking six hundred students enrolled in courses offered in Charlottesville, and one hundred forty-four students enrolled in J-Term Study Abroad programs. Study abroad programs were offered in Germany, India, Ireland, Italy, Nicaragua, St. Kitts and Nevis, South East Asia, and the United Kingdom. Courses in Anthropology, Art History, Biology, Commerce, Drama, Education, Engineering (STS), English, Environmental Sciences, German Studies, Global Health, History, Mathematics, Nursing, Politics, Psychology, Public Health, Religious Studies, Sociology, South Asian Studies, and Spanish were available to students in J-Term 2010. January Term 2009 Areas of study for January Term 2009 included Anthropology, Biology, Commerce, Drama, East Asian Studies, Engineering (STS), English, Environmental Sciences, History, Global Health, Mathematics, Middle Eastern Studies, Music, Nursing, Physics, Politics, Psychology, Public Health, Religious Studies, Slavic Studies, Sociology, Spanish, Studio Art, and Systems Engineering. On-Grounds January Term classes met January 2 – 3 and January 5 - 10, 2009.
Eight study abroad programs were offered in January Term 2008. The host countries for the programs were Belize, Germany, Ghana, Ireland, Italy, Nicaragua, and Spain. Dates for January Term 2008 Study Abroad Programs will varied by program. The application process for January Term study abroad programs is managed by the International Studies Office (ISO). The deadline for January Term study abroad program applications was October 1, 2007.
