COMM 4660: The Advice Business: The Basics of Strategic Consulting [3]

Elizabeth K Moore, Lecturer

"The Advice Business: The Basics of  Strategic Consulting" is a 3.0 credit-hour introductory consulting course designed primarily for Third-Year Commerce students but open to Fourth-Year Commerce students as well. The course focuses on the advisory services that traditional management consulting, accounting, and technology consulting firms provide to their clients, including strategy, operations, change management, business advisory, and IT.  The course is designed to survey the dynamics of each type of client-service offering, including the methodologies used to diagnose and solve clients' problems, the specific skills needed for success, and the lifestyle and other cultural issues that help students assess career fit.  Current practitioners from select consulting firms who recruit at The University will be invited to class to help facilitate case discussions and skill-development workshops, as appropriate, as well as share their perspectives on their careers and address students' specific questions.  Given the variance in guest-firm schedules, students must have captive availability to attend all class and outside-of-class team-working sessions during J-term.  Evaluation will be based on class participation, learning team contribution, and a concept test.

COMM 4559: Commerce for Poets [3]

This course has been cancelled.

Many liberal arts majors graduate with minimal exposure to key principles of commerce, principles that are important to almost all professional fields, including not for profits.  Given the outstanding caliber of UVA graduates,  many students will go on to have leadership roles in their communities. Both the student and the community will benefit by an increased familiarity and comfort with business, finance and investing.

Understanding the key principles of capitalism is essential to understanding business practices and their limits, issues that inform our individual choices as well as our collective politics.  The financial meltdown of 2008 shows how important finance has become to most segments of society, and how ignorance presents risks to us all .  Finally, almost all savings and retirement plans are now directed by individuals.  These plans generally begin with the first job, and early decisions are crucial to maximizing the choices you have in life.  Ignorance of the basics of investing is no longer an option.

Websites, short readings, current events and movies will provide the backdrop to class lectures and discussions about principles of business, finance and investing.
