Hearing Israel: Music, Culture and History at 60

As the State of Israel marks its sixtieth anniversary in 2008, the University of Virginia Jewish Studies Program is hosting a unique conference on music in Israel. This unprecedented gathering will feature leading Israeli, American, and European scholars exploring Israeli music as a window into national identity, politics, religion, and culture. Alongside the academic sessions, the conference will also feature concert performances by Israeli musical legends Etti Ankri (pictured on the left) and Moussa Berlin as well as cellist Uri Vardi and the Charlottesville and University Symphony Orchestra.
The academic conference sessions will run Sunday, April 13, 9:00 AM – 1:15 PM and Monday, 9:00 AM - 6:15PM, with a keynote address by Professor Edwin Seroussi, Emanuel Alexandre Professor of Musicology, Chairman of the Musicology Department and Director of the Jewish Music Research Center, Hebrew University of Jerusalem, along with presentations by

3:30-5:30 Charlottesville & University Symphony Orchestra Concert conducted by Kate Tamarkin, with cello soloist Uri Vardi, performing works by Bloch, Golijov, and Berlioz Location: Old Cabell Hall Auditorium
8:00-10:30 Evening concert of Israeli popular, folk, and religious music featuring the Etti Ankri Band and the Moussa Berlin Ensemble (pictured on the left).
