The Latin American Studies Program at the University of Virginia
This major seeks the study of Latin America under many different perspectives and approaches. Unity and diversity are two faces of a continent linked by language and religion and divided by the same elements. By looking at the two sides of this paradigm the students will get a more realistic understanding of Latin America as a whole. The fact that students have to take classes in at least four departments guarantees a more diversified and comprehensive study. Classes are offered in history, government and foreign affairs, philosophy, religion, economics, environmental sciences, anthropology, as well as in English, French, Portuguese and Spanish literature and culture. No more than 15 credits in any one department may be counted toward the major. First year students can choose classes at the 100-200 level in any of these departments and /or the languages requirements in Spanish (SPAN 202) and/or (PORT 212).

The program offers a major
(30
credits), a
minor
(18 credits), and
a distinguished
major (30 credits plus a
thesis). Every semester the
program prepares a Course Description booklet of all the courses for
the following semester. You can also consult the listing of
courses taught in past years. Only the courses listed in these
program listings count towards the major.
