Finding the Joy...How to take control of your life at Work and Home

The talk will provide an update of the activities of the Office for Diversity and Equity to include the nine areas of engagement at U.Va. The nine areas of engagement include Alumni, Community, Curriculum, Faculty, Friends, Partner Institutions, Precollege Populations, Staff, and Students. In addition, cover the value of diversity as it relates specifically to health care.

AFTERNOON SESSIONS 1:45pm - 3:15pm

Exploring the Realms of Work
Presented by Kaye Davie-Monroe

During this session participants will explore the positional realms of work, identify their current positioning, understand the need for vocational shifts and consider what is needed for self actualization in the world of work.

Workstation Ergonomics: Prescriptions for Preventing Workstation Injury
Presented by Karen Allen

Is a day at your computer a pain in the neck? How about in your hands, wrists or arms? Or your back? Are you working in awkward postures? Those aches and pains that you feel may be signs of actual physical injury - such as Carpal Tunnel Syndrome or Tendonitis. Making improvements such as improving awkward postures not only makes you feel better, but can also increase productivity as much as 20 minutes per day. Making bigger improvements like providing chairs that give good support can improve productivity up to 40 minutes per day. This session will discuss the risk factors involved in "working at your desk" and in your office. It will offer tips on injury prevention. We will discuss how to avoid those stressful postures with proper computer - station set-ups and how to protect your back when you are lifting and moving supplies around the office. Keeping employees healthy keeps them on the job and allows them to do their work.
