Welcome to the University of Virginia
University Human Resources hosts a comprehensive orientation experience in three steps; an in-person program, e-learning modules to be completed within two weeks of the in-person component, and a follow-up checklist to assist you in jumpstarting a successful career at the University. We focus on delivering the right content at the right time to support your successful transition to our University community.
Please read a welcome letter from Susan Carkeek, Vice President and Chief Human Resource Officer.
Orientation begins with a half-day (8:30 am-12:00 pm) learning experience that focuses on the University’s rich history and culture, our current mission and our future plans. You will also meet other new employees, and understand the importance of your role in the University community.
At the heart of the program is a 45 minute experiential outing to the Academical Village. It will be important to wear or bring comfortable walking shoes, umbrellas, and other appropriate weather gear to enjoy this outing. Please tell your hiring official if you have physical limitations or are otherwise unable to take part in this tour.
Ideally, you will attend the in-person program on or close to your first day of employment.
Grounds for Success will be held in Newcomb Hall, #30 on map in the Kaleidoscope room, room number 380 unless otherwise indicated. (See schedule below.)
Please park in the Central Grounds parking garage #9 on map for this program. You will be given a parking pass that covers 5 hours of parking at the completion of this program.
If you have any questions prior to the in-person component, please contact your HRCS Consultant (if staff), or your HR Department (if faculty or professional research staff).
The e-learning modules are required of all new employees and may be accessed online through our learning management self-service system or directly from this website. A job aid takes you step-by-step through the process of accessing the modules through our Integrated System Employee Self-Service. This job aid will also be given to you as a hard copy when you attend the in-person program. If you are interested in accessing the modules before the in-person program, you can do so by selecting the following buttons. Four of the six modules are available on this site.
It will take approximately 1.5 hours to complete the required 6 modules. They are each highly interactive and include many resources for your information and use. You will be able to return to these modules at any time.
It is recommended that you complete these modules within two weeks of attending the in-person program.
We continue to expect all new employees to attend a GFS class. If you have any questions about anything in the e-learning modules, contact the resources identified in the module
For best results, please open the E-Learning modules in Internet Explorer.
The Grounds for Success in-person orientation is from 8:30 am-12:00 pm in the Kaleidoscope Room in Newcomb Hall (#30 on map) unless otherwise indicated on the calendar below. Please arrive by 8:15 am.
