UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA News Alert: USPS Increased Rates May 11, 2009 The USPS just released the following postage costs changes. You can download a PDF version of the new price list using the link below On May 11, 2009 the price for a 1-ounce First-Class Mail stamp increased from 42¢ to 44¢. Prices for other mailing services — Standard Mail, Periodicals, Package Services (including Parcel Post), and Extra Services — also changed. The average increase by class of mail is at or below the rate of inflation as measured by the Consumer Price Index. Customers can use their Forever Stamps — regardless of when purchased — to mail 1-ounce letters after the price change, without the need for additional postage. Forever Stamps are widely available through Post Offices, commercial retail outlets such as grocery stores, and online<http://shop.usps.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10152&storeId=10001&categoryId=18406&productId=37901&langId=-1&WT.ac=37901>. Prices for mailing services will continue to adjust each May. Prices for most shipping services, including Express Mail and Priority Mail, were adjusted in January and will not change in May.
Consistent with the new law*, prices for mailing services will be adjusted annually each May. The Postal Service plans to provide 90 days' notice before the price changes each year. See usps.com/prices for all mailing services prices and links to downloadable pricing files, and additional information. The USPS will announce new prices for shipping services — Express Mail, Priority Mail, Parcel Select, and International Mail — in March. |
