How To Apply
Deadlines
We admit students to the major each spring semester. March 15 is usually the deadline each spring for applications. Please check with the department for the current year deadline. Return the application to the Media Studies Office in 401 Cabell Hall. Please do not e-mail or fax applications. Decisions are made on March 30 of each year. A sample application is located in the Forms section. The current year's application will be available in the Forms section in January.
Application Process
Students will be admitted to the Media Studies major by application process. Students currently in their second year may apply for the major in the Spring for admission to the Program in the first semester of their 3rd year. Applications are only accepted during the spring semester of each year. Students should have a GPA of 3.4 to be considered for the major. Applications are usually due in the Media Studies office March 15th, but you must check with the department for the current year's deadline prior to submitting your application. The current year application will also have the correct deadline listed. Prior to this date there will be one or more informational sessions scheduled.
Application Consists of
- Description of courses taken (with grades and explanation of GPA)
- Statement of purpose (one paragraph statement about career plans and goals)
- Plan of study: a brief description of the student's objectives for study in the major; this is NOT a listing of courses, which may vary from year to year, but is an outline of intellectual goals to be achieved through coursework in the field of media studies. (A statement like "I like to watch films" is insufficient; however the following formulations, accompanied by a description of the means to achieve these goals, would be sufficient: "I'm interested in the evolution of the studio system." Or "I want to trace the relations between notions of intellectual property and internet law."
