Apply

Students will be admitted to the Media Studies major by application process. Students currently in their second year may apply for the major in the Spring for admission to the Program in the first semester of their 3rd year. Applications are only accepted during the spring semester of each year. Students should have a GPA of 3.4 to be considered for the major, but students with a lower GPA are encouraged to apply.

The Application

  • Description of courses taken (with grades and explanation of GPA)
  • Career Goals: one paragraph statement about career plans and goals.
  • Experience: an explanation of work, extra-curricular activities, internship, creative, or practical experience have you pursued that are media related.
  • Intellectual Objectives: a brief description of the student's objectives for study in the major; this is NOT a listing of courses, which may vary from year to year, but is an outline of intellectual goals to be achieved through coursework in the field of media studies. (A statement like “I like to watch films” is insufficient; however the following formulations, accompanied by a description of the means to achieve these goals, would be sufficient: “I'm interested in the evolution of the studio system.” Or “I want to trace the relations between notions of intellectual property and internet law.”)
  • Final Question: an examination of a media event or phenomenon that you feel has had a significant social, political, or cultural impact.
