Hector Amaya
Hector Amaya, PhD, is an Assistant Professor of Media Studies. He joined the University of Virginia in 2008. Previously, he taught in the Communication Studies Department at Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas. At Southwestern, Mr. Amaya was also an affiliate of the Feminist Studies and the Latin American Studies programs. Mr. Amaya has a Masters in Communication Studies from University of Calgary (Canada), a PhD in Radio, Television and Film from the University of Texas at Austin, and an Honors degree on Visual Communication from the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (Mexico City, Mexico).
Mr. Amaya researches, writes and teaches in the areas of global media, Latin American film, comparative media studies, and Latinas/os media studies. His manuscript Film Criticism in Cuba and the USA (currently under review with University of Illinois Press) is a comparative study of film reception of Cuban film, cultural criticism, and citizenship in Cuba and the USA from the 1960s to 1985. Mr. Amaya's journal articles have appeared in places like Television & New Media, Studies in Hispanic Cinemas, New Cinemas, Critical Discourse Studies, Latino Studies, and Text and Performance Quarterly. Currently, Mr. Amaya is writing a second book, tentatively titled Media and Citizenship: Latinas/os, Immigrants, and Transculturation, in which he explores the relationship of media to citizenship and the impact this relationship has on Latinos/as.
Mr. Amaya is the Vice-Chair of the Latino Studies Division and of La Raza Caucus of the National Communication Association (NCA). He also co-chairs the Latino Caucus of the Society of Cinema and Media Studies.
