Appendix D. Responsibilities of Teaching Assistants and Graders

I. GRADERS

Expected Weekly Work Hours: 7 to 10 on average.

Expected Duties:

  • Help with course administration in ways that the instructor specifies ahead of time (such assistance may include: collecting reserve articles and having them xeroxed and/or scanned);
  • Attend all lectures, unless exempted by instructor;
  • Hold office hours;
  • Hold review sessions;
  • Assist with record-keeping, such as for attendance purposes;
  • Assist with grading of exams, essays, and or other assignments.

II. TEACHING ASSISTANTS

Expected Weekly Work Hours: 10 to 12 on average, including 3 teaching/contact hours.

Teaching Assistants have significantly more responsibility than graders. TA's should have no more than 60 students, total, in their discussion sections.

Expected Duties:

  • Help with course administration in ways that the instructor specifies ahead of time (such assistance may include: collecting reserve articles and having them xeroxed and/or scanned);
  • Attend all lectures, unless exempted by the instructor;
  • Structure the discussion sections for the course and create a syllabus that specifies any assignments (additional to those assigned by the main course syllabus) and the grading criteria for the discussion sections;
  • Teach discussion sections without instructor being present;
  • Hold office hours.
  • Grade exams, quizzes, essays, or other assignments given as part of the discussion sections;
  • Assist with course record-keeping, such as for attendance purposes;
  • Assist with grading of exams, essays, and or other assignments from the lecture portion of the course.
