Rina Verma Williams

Rina Verma Williams received her A.M and Ph.D. in Political Science from Harvard University, and B.A. (Political Science) and B.S. (Chemistry) from the University of California at Irvine. She teaches in MESA-LC and SWAG, and is Associate Faculty in the Woodrow Wilson Department of Politics. Her areas of specialization include South Asian politics; women and gender; ethnicity and nationalism; religion and politics; and politics of the developing nations. Her book, Postcolonial Politics and Personal Laws: Colonial Legal Legacies and the Indian State, was published by Oxford University Press in 2006. Her current research examines how different forms of identity (such as religion and nationality) have been constructed in gendered terms. She previously served as Interim Director of the Studies in Women and Gender Program and Associate Director of the Center for South Asian Studies. Before coming to Virginia, she taught at the University of Houston and Prairie View A&M University.
