Background and Interests

I have been teaching Urdu and Hindi for more than a decade at the college and university level in various academic settings.  I am also involved in material development for Urdu and Hindi, being the co-author of parallel introductory Urdu and Hindi textbooks that are under publication by Georgetown University Press.  I have also published a monograph on Urdu prose poetry which is based on my PhD work.  In addition, I have published several pieces of original Urdu poetry, fiction, and literary criticism in leading Urdu literary journals.

My primary academic interests are Urdu literature and literary criticism as well as women’s studies.  I am also interested in Urdu-Hindi language teaching, pedagogy, curriculum development, and assessment.  In addition to teaching, my professional experience also includes my previous position as the Urdu-Hindi language specialist in STARTALK, a federal initiative to promote less commonly taught languages that is administered by the University of Maryland’s National Foreign Language Center.
