Working without Wages: Enslaved Laborers at the University of Virginia, 1819-1865

Special Collections Exhibit

Presented by the University Library

Date:Friday, January 20-February 29, 2012
Location:

First Floor, Albert and Shirley Small Special Collections Library

In recognition of the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday, this exhibit highlights records from the Albert and Shirley Small Special Collections Library, which document the building and maintenance of the University by enslaved workers, and, in part, the stories of two of these enslaved workers, Henry Martin (right) and Sally Cottrell Cole.

The materials represent a selection of ledgers, reports, photographs, and letters from the University of Virginia Archives, the Holsinger Studio Collection, and the personal papers of various Virginia families.

Working without Wages was curated by Petrina Jackson and Ervin Jordan.
