Applications for admission to graduate studies in the Department of Materials Science are online only. Questions may be directed to the Graduate Student Coordinator.

The deadline for applications is January 15, 2014.

Frequently Asked Admissions Questions:

 

Q: How long are scores for the TOEFL and GRE valid?
A: TOEFL scores are valid for two years. GRE scores for five.

Q: For ETS codes, do I need to use a department code or is the school code sufficient?
A: We do not use department codes for ETS. The institution code for UVA is 5820.

Q: Must my my official transcripts and scores arrive before the January 15th deadline for my application to be considered?
A: No; Official transcripts and test scores are NOT required for the review process if you upload unofficial transcripts and type your unofficial test scores in your application. All materials such as your resume, essays, unofficial transcripts, unofficial test scores and other supplemental materials should be submitted electronically as part of your application. If you are admitted and choose to accept our offer, then we will require official sealed transcripts from all your previously attended schools and official test scores from ETS.

Q: How can I pay the application fee?
A: The application fee may be paid on-line by VISA or Mastercard. You may also pay by check or money order mailed directly to the Graduate Studies Office. In order to ensure that the payment is credited to the correct application, please write your full name and birth date on the check. After payment is credited to your application, your application status will show payment received and you will be able to submit your application.

Q: Can the application fee be waived?
A: No

Q: Can the TOEFL requirement be waived?
A: Generally no; however, in some cases where the applicant will be completing a degree from an institution in an English-speaking country and the applicant has two letters from native English speaking attesting to his/her English proficiency an out of date TOEFL score may be considered.

Q: Can I apply to another department and still only pay one fee?
A: Yes; within the School of Engineeering and Applied Science, simply send an email request to the Graduate Studies Office. You must apply to graduate programs outside the School of Engieering Applied Science, for example Chemistry or Physics, separately by applying to the School of Arts and Sciences.

Q: How many students have accepted from my school? How many from my country? How many students work in each research area?
A: You may check on our student page and see for yourself.

Q: Do International students need to fill out the Financial Guarantee Form prior to applying?
A: Financial Guarantee Forms are not required for consideration of the admission. The FGF must be completed after when applying for a VISA as part of the I-20 request package.

Q: What is the address that I should use for my official documents?
A: All documentation is sent to the central Graduate Studies Office.
