Andrew Hodges, MSE Grad Student, Finishes Ironman
Andrew Hodges, first-year graduate student in MSE, competed in and completed his first Ford Ironman Triathlon World Championship in Kona, HI on October 15, 2005. Amazingly, he finished 6 th in his age group (Men 18-24), and 249 th overall (out of 1,743 who qualified). The triathlon consists of a 2.4-mile ocean swim, 112-mile bike race and 26.2-mile run. Andrew, a 2005 graduate from the MSE department at the University of Florida, had never run a full Ironman, qualifying for the World Championship via the Florida Half Ironman in Orlando, Florida where he won his age group and was the 2 nd overall amateur. Andrew has been a competitive runner since high school but has only been competing in triathlons for about 4 years. In addition to some local racing, his future racing plans include a trip to the USAT National Collegiate Championships in April and USAT Age Group Nationals in next August.

Andrew’s research at UVa focuses on understanding the conditions that control the propagation of crevice corrosion of corrosion resistant alloys exposed to aggressive atmospheres.
