  • 9/2016 – Noelle Co presents a talk at the 2016 International Conference on Fatigue Damage of Structural Materials XI titled "The Effect of Galvanically Induced Corrosion Morphologies on Fatigue Initiation and Fatigue Behavior of AA7050-T7451."

  • 9/2016 – Noelle Co presented a poster on the effect of galvanically induced corrosion morphologies on fatigue cracking of AA7050-T7451 at the International Conference on Fatigue Damage of Structural Materials XI. Her poster was recognized as the top poster in the Environmental Cracking session! Congrats Noelle!!

  • 9/2016 – Prof. Burns chairs the International Conference on Fatigue Damage of Structural Materials XI in Hyannis, MA.

  • 9/2016 – Prof. Burns presents an invited talk at the Colorado School of Mines titled, "The Effect of Chloride Concentration on the Corrosion-Fatigue Crack Behavior of Custom 465-H950."

  • 9/2016 – Prof. Burns presents an invited talk at the University of Utah titled, "The Effect of Environmental Interactions on the Fatigue Crack Behavior of Aerospace Al-Alloys.".

  • 9/2016 – Prof. Gangloff is honored at the 2016 International Hydrogen Conference for his contributions to the field and the conference. Congratulations Prof. Gangloff!

  • 9/2016 – Zach Harris presents a talk at the 2016 International Hydrogen Conference titled "Do Hydrogen-Deformation Interactions Aid Integranular Cracking?"

  • 9/2016 – Zach Harris and Prof. Burns attend the 2016 International Hydrogen Conference. Zach presented a poster on the influence of heat treatment on hydrogen environment-assisted cracking in Monel K-500 and Prof. Burns presented a poster on the effect of lot-to-lot variation on hydrogen environment-assisted cracking in Monel K-500.

  • 9/2016 – Mick McMurtrey and Prof. Burns' paper on fracture mechanics modelling of constant and variable amplitude fatigue behaviour of field corroded 7075-T6511 aluminium is accepted for publication in Fatigue and Fracture of Engineering Materials and Structures!

  • 9/2016 – Zach Harris passed his Ph.D. qualifying exam! Congratulations Zach!!

  • 8/2016 – The group goes on a hiking trip that ends with dinner at Devil's Backbone brewery!

  • 7/2016 – Matt McMahon presented a poster at the 2016 Gordon Research Seminar titled "Intergranular Stress Corrosion Cracking Suppression by Metallic Primers on AA5456-H116."

  • 7/2016 – Noelle and Prof. Burns' paper on galvanic corrosion-induced fatigue crack initiation and propagation behavior in AA7050-T7451 is accepted for publication in CORROSION!

  • 6/2016 – Zach Harris received one of the two 2016 International Symposium on Superalloys Scholarships offered by The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS). Congrats Zach!

  • 5/2016 – Ryan and Prof. Burns' paper on the effect of chloride concentration on corrosion-fatigue crack behavior of Custom 465 is published in the International Journal of Fatigue!

  • 5/2016 – Noelle Co was a finalist for the UVa MSE Department's 2016 Doris Kuhlmann Wilsdorf Outstanding Graduate Student Award and the 2016 Fred D. Rosi Outstanding Citizen Award. Congrats Noelle!

  • 4/2016 – Zach Harris, Justin Dolph, Dr. Greg Pioszak, Dr. Brendy Rincon Troconis, Prof. Scully, and Prof. Burns' paper on the effect of lot-to-lot microstructural variation on HEAC in Monel K-500 is published in Metallurgical and Materials Transactions A!

  • 4/2016 – Zach Harris presented a paper and gave a talk at the Virginia Space Grant Consortium 2016 Conference titled, "The Effect of Precipitate Morphology on Hydrogen Environment-Assisted Cracking of Monel K-500"

  • 4/2016 – Noelle Co and Zach Harris presented their posters at the University of Virginia Engineering Research Symposium! Zach is awarded 5th place for his poster and Noelle receives Honorable Mention for her poster. Congrats Noelle and Zach!

  • 3/2016 – Zach Harris and Cameron Springer's proposal, "The Influence of Heat Treatment on Hydrogen Environment-Assisted Cracking of Monel K-500", was selected for a Double Hoo fellowship! Congratulations Zach and Cameron!

  • 3/2016 – Prof. Burns is selected for the Virginia Space Grant Consortium New Investiagor Program Award! Congratulations Prof. Burns!

  • 3/2016 – Zach Harris was selected for his second Virginia Space Grant Consortium Fellowship! Congratulations Zach!

  • 3/2016 – Noelle Co and Zach Harris were selected as two of the top 15 finalists for the University of Virginia Engineering Research Symposium (UVERS)! Congrats Noelle and Zach! They will present their posters at the symposium on April 1st!

  • 3/2016 – Noelle Co gave a talk at CORROSION 2016 titled "Fatigue Initiation and Crack Growth Behavior in AA 7050 with Galvanically Induced Corrosion Damage"

  • 3/2016 – Noelle Co presented a poster at CORROSION 2016 titled "Galvanic Corrosion Induced Fatigue Crack Initiation and Propagation Behavior in AA7050-T7451." She won 1st place in the Marcel Pourbaix Category for best poster in the field of Corrosion Science! Congratulations Noelle!!

  • 1/2016 – Fernando Mata Cordero joined the Burns Research Group! Welcome to the team!

  • 1/2016 – Prof. Burns received a 2016 Air Force Young Investigator Research Program Award to study the effect of high altitude environments on dislocation structure evolution during fatigue cracking of aerospace Al alloys!

  • 1/2016 – Prof. Burns, Zach, Justin, and Prof. Gangloff's paper on improvements to decohesion modeling of HEAC in Monel K-500 is published in Metallurgical and Materials Transactions A!

2015

  • 12/2015 – Prof. Burns took the group out for a Christmas Happy Hour at Eddy's Tavern! Happy holidays!

  • 11/2015 – New computers and a in-situ furnace are installed in the lab to complete the final round of upgrades!

  • 11/2015 – Noelle Co presented a poster at the DoD-Allied Nations Technical Corrosion Conference titled "Galvanic Corrosion Induced Fatigue Crack Initiation and Propagation Behavior in AA 7050-T7451." She won 2nd place in the Milton Levy Category for the field of Corrosion Science! Congratulations Noelle!!

  • 10/2015 – Prof. Burns's paper on the effect of plate thickness on the environmental fatigue crack growth in AA7085 is published in International Journal of Fatigue!

  • 9/2015 – The Environmental Fracture Lab underwent major renovations with the installation of two new FlexTest controllers, two new load frames, and a new hydraulic pump! Check out the Lab Facilities page for more information on the lab!

  • 9/2015 – Team hike along the Moorman River trail and dinner at Crozet's Pizza!

  • 10/2014 – Dr. Sang Kim and Dr. Kwon from Gyeongsang National University and the Korean Institute of Materials Science visit with the Burns Group. They gave an interesting talk on their work and then met with students from the Burns Group.

  • 9/2014 – Prof. Burns is chosen to be Committee Chairman for the 10th International Conference on Fatigue Damage of Structural Metals! Congratulations Prof. Burns!
