Information for Prospective Undergraduate Students

Application for admission to the University of Virginia should be made through the Office of Admissions, P.O. Box 400160, University of Virginia, Charlottesville, VA 22904-4160. A new, on-line application can be used as well as the traditional paper application which you can request. For further information call (434) 982- 3200; or visit the Office of Admission website.

Music Supplements

The University of Virginia is interested in recruiting students with talent and interest in music. If you have an interest in music and wish to supplement your application to the University of Virginia, you may submit a CD (preferred format) or audiocassette recording, or original compositions (not original copies) to the Music Department. Please write the following information on the CD:
  • your name
  • date of birth
  • instrument recorded (style, if applicable)
  • whether you are applying early/regular decision; or transfer student
These materials should be sent directly to the Music Department Arts Supplement Coordinator, separately from the rest of your University of Virginia application. For the correct address, as well as detailed guidelines, please visit the Office of Admissions's website for visual and performing arts students.

Unfortunately, any items you send to the Music Department cannot be returned to you.


Information for Prospective Graduate Students
To apply to the PhD program in music, please go to the website of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. All application instructions can be found there.

Undergraduate Studies
The Director of Undergraduate Studies in Music for 2006-07, is Matthew Burtner (email: mburtner@virginia.edu). Majors and prospective majors are welcome to contact the faculty via e-mail, schedule an appointment to meet with them, or drop by their offices during regular weekly office hours. During course registration periods, the faculty will have additional office hours, as posted on their office doors.

Music Major Requirements (The B.A. in music, advanced undergraduate programs, and the Distinguished Majors Program.)

Graduate Studies
The Director of Graduate Studies in Music for 2006-07 is Scott DeVeaux (email: deveaux@virginia.edu.). The McIntire Department of Music invites applications for the Ph.D. in Critical and Comparative Studies and Music Composition. Semester Course Offerings

Toolkit - Students and Instructors
Course evaluations are administrated through Toolkit which requires that you have an account (userID and password). The account is very quick and easy to set up.

Students: It is important that you login with your userID and password from the Toolkit homepage. This way, the program will bring up specific music courses in which you have enrolled.



Colloquia
The Department offers a colloquium series, with lectures normally on Fridays from 3:30 to 5 p.m. in 107, Old Cabell Hall. Other times are as noted. We invite interesting thinkers and musicians to present on a variety of topics, and we also feature our own faculty and graduate students. These events are free and open to the public. Music graduate students are expected to attend these, as do our faculty and many of our majors. Recent visitors have included David Amram, Rachel Bagby, David Brodbeck, Bill Cole, Beverley Diamond, Chris Dobrian, Cynthia Fuchs, Krin Gabbard, Mark Katz, Neil Lerner, Llan de Cubel (Asturian ensemble), Marc Perlman, Russel Pinkston, Guy Ramsey, Bernard Rands, Chris Shultis, and Hilary Tann.
