Luke Ward Distinguished Major Recital
Sunday, March 28th, 2004, 3:30pm - Old Cabell Hall Auditorium

Luke Ward will present his distinguished major clarinet recital Sunday, March 28 at 3:30pm in Old Cabell Hall. The recital is free and open to the public. Luke will be accompanied by fourth year Guanqiao Tong on piano.

The program features twentieth-century works of contrasting styles. Among the selections are Poulenc's Sonata for clarinet and piano, a classic in the repertoire; Muczynski's Time Pieces for clarinet and piano, an eclectic American piece premiered to critical acclaim in 1984 by Mitchell Lurie; and an unaccompanied piece, La Naissance d'un Papillon by Yvonne Desportes, featuring a variety of extended techniques including polyphonics. The program notes for the recital will take a critical rather than biographical approach, examining the ways in which performance of Western art music reflects and constructs social identities.

Luke is a fourth year music and biochemistry double major from Alexandria, Virginia. He has played clarinet since fifth grade, and has studied with Marguerite Baker of the Baltimore Opera, Steve Barta of the BSO, and Paul Cigan of the NSO. He was selected concertmaster of the 1999 All-Virginia honor band, and was the state band's E-flat clarinetist the following year. Luke currently studies with Nancy Garlick at the University, and has performed with the Charlottesville and University Symphony Orchestra since his first semester. He has also performed with the American Youth Philharmonic, the Oratorio Society of Charlottesville, the Virginia Consort, and chamber groups at the University. Next year he will enter a doctoral program in the biological sciences at Columbia University.
