On Sunday, April 24, at 3:30 p.m. in the Auditorium of Old Cabell Hall, the University of Virginia Ensemble for Early Music under the direction of Paul Walker will present a concert of Baroque masterworks. Tickets for the concert are $10 for the general public, $5 for students, and 5 ARTS $ for UVA Students. Tickets can be purchased by calling the Cabell Hall Box Office at 434.924.3984.
Highlights of the program will be the Concerto for Four Harpsichords and Strings by Johann Sebastian Bach, with guest harpsichordist Bradley Lehman joined by Paul Walker, Elizabeth Lindau, and Virginia Chilton, and the grand Passacaille for orchestra and chorus from the opera Armide by Jean-Baptiste Lully. The remainder of the program includes madrigals by Claudio Monteverdi for singers and instruments, vocal works by Monteverdi and Heinrich Schütz, music for viola da gamba and singers by Orlando Gibbons, and German music for early brass instruments. All of the instrumentalists will be performing on period instruments.
Of special interest will be the recent research by Bradley Lehman into the tuning system used by Bach himself for tuning his keyboard instruments, and our performance of the four-harpsichord concerto will be the first anywhere to implement this tuning.
