Oboist Scott Perry will perform on April 10 at 3:30pm in Old Cabell Hall. Perry, along with pianist Emily Chua, will perform waltzes by Brazilian composer Osvaldo Lacerda, the Hindemith Sonata for Oboe and Piano, a virtuosic fantasy on Donizetti’s opera Poliuto by Antonio Pasculli (the “Paganini of the oboe, some have called him) and a trio for oboe, horn and piano by Heinrich von Herzogenberg ¾ an unusual combination of instruments. Horn player Dwight Purvis will appear in the last piece.
California-born Scott Perry holds degrees from Indiana University and the University of Cincinnati's College-Conservatory of Music and is currently a doctoral candidate at Michigan State University. An active freelance musician, he has performed with orchestras throughout the West and the Midwest, including the Seattle Symphony, the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Scott has performed on three continents for audiences which have included heads of state, royalty, and even the Pope. Scott is currently the Principal Oboe of the Charlottesville and University Symphony Orchestra, the oboist of the Albemarle Ensemble, and is a member of the music faculty at the University of Virginia.
Pianist Emily Yap Chua is Assistant Professor of Music at Randolph-Macon Woman's College. As a chamber musician she has collaborated with members of the New World Symphony, Nashville Symphony, Charlotte Symphony, Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra, principals of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, and faculty at the Juilliard School. She holds degrees from the College-Conservatory of Music, University of Cincinnati, and Florida State University.
Emily Yap Chua, pianist
Emily Yap Chua earned the Bachelor of Arts degree in music with minors in mathematics and dance from the Florida State University in 1996, graduating magna cum laude, and continued on to graduate study at the College-Conservatory of Music, University of Cincinnati. As a full scholarship student and teaching assistant at CCM-UC, she earned the Master of Music degree in piano performance in 1998 and the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in piano performance with a cognate in music theory in 2002. Her teachers include Rita Sloan, Eugene and Elizabeth Pridonoff, Wu Han, and Leonard Mastrogiacomo.
As a scholarship student at the Aspen Music Festival in 1995, Dr. Chua was a regular accompanist for students of Dorothy Delay, an association which continued at CCM-UC. She also served as the primary chamber music pianist at the Opera Theatre of Lucca (Italy) in 2000, and was staff accompanist at the Cincinnati Flute Symposium in 2001. Her past collaborations include performances with members of the Nashville Symphony, Charlotte Symphony, Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra, principals of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, and faculty at The Julliard School. A former substitute member of the New World Symphony in Miami, Florida, her performance venues have ranged across the United States and abroad, including Italy and the Philippines. She has appeared as a soloist with the Lynchburg Symphony Orchestra and recently appeared as a guest artist at the Youngstown State University in Ohio. Future engagements include concerts at the University of Arizona and the Gellman Room Concert Series at the Richmond Public Library.
Dr. Chua currently holds the position of Assistant Professor of Music at Randolph-Macon Woman's College, where she teaches Piano, Accompanying, Music Theory Lab, Women in Music, and coaches Ensemble.
