UVA Chamber Music Series
Sunday, February 12th, 3:30pm - Old Cabell Hall

The McIntire Department of Music presents the second concert of the 2005-2006 UVA Chamber Music Series on Sunday,
February 12th at 3:30 pm in Old Cabell Hall, on the grounds of the University of Virginia.
The concert will feature Victoria Bond's "Hot Air," "Duo Concertante" by Raymond Helble and Schumann's Piano Quintet.
The program begins with Victoria Bond's "Hot Air" for wind quintet, depicting dramatic scenes from "Gulliver's Travels"
and performed by the Albemarle Ensemble. Bond writes: "Commissioned by the Renaissance City Winds, this quintet
elaborates dramatic scenes from the opera that I was working on at that time, Travels. The first movement, Hot Air,
shows Gulliver in an agitated state, eager for the journey, impatient to begin; the second movement, Who Is Gulliver,
finds him at a turning point, where he has lost his direction and his sense of identity; the third movement, In My Land,
gives him a glimpse of a more perfect world of peace and harmony; the last movement, Yahoos, gives an unflattering
portrait of humans as seen by a more advanced lifeform."

I-Jen Fang, marimba
Next will be "Duo Concertante" for Violin and Marimba by Raymond Helble, performed by David Sariti, violin, and I-Jen Fang,
marimba. The Percussive Arts Society Official Website writes "Commissioned by Leigh Howard Stevens in the 1970s, this
work is idiomatic for the marimbist and requires advanced four-mallet technique. Helble's compositional style creates a
melodic dialogue between the marimbist and violinist that is quite appealing to the listener. This is an excellent
composition that showcases both instruments well."
The closing work will be Schumann's Piano Quintet with Mimi Tung, piano, Bonnie Warner and David Sariti, violins,
Constance Gee, viola and Amy Leung, cello. Schumann wrote his quintet, the first important work for that
instrumentation, in 1842. The piece has been a favorite with audiences and performers since Felix Mendelssohn
premiered it in a private concert that year, and Schumann's wife, Clara, performed it in public concert a month
later. Mimi Tung describes the Piano Quintet as "A very beautiful, very romantic work, dark and rich and full of
longing as well as joy."
