Distinguished Major Recital: Lesley Hogg
Saturday, April 14th, 2007, 3:30pm - Old Cabell Hall
A native of Gloucester, Virginia, Lesley Hogg is a fourth-year double major in Music and Russian and Eastern European Studies with a minor in French. She has played the viola for ten years. For her Distinguished Major Project, Lesley is combining her two majors by performing a recital of viola music by 20th century Eastern European Composers.
At The University of Virginia, Lesley has studied the viola under a full music lesson scholarship with Constance Gee and Johanna Beaver. During her 4th year she started taking supplemental lessons with Karen Dreyfus of The Juilliard School in New York. In high school, Lesley studied with Jennifer Snyder, Assistant Principal Violist of the Virginia Symphony. She has performed in a viola master class with Amadi Hummings and chamber music master classes with the Miami String Quartet and Adele Anthony.
Lesley has played in the Charlottesville and University Symphony Orchestra since 2003 and for the November 11th and 13th, 2005 concerts she served as principal violist. During her time at UVA, she participated in the Baroque Orchestra, the Opera Viva orchestra, and Beyond the Notes Summer Chamber Music Workshop as well as engagements with the Ash Lawn Opera Festival, the University Singers, Chamber Singers, and the Oratorio Society of Charlottesville.
Outside of music, Lesley's other interests include drawing, reading, and fencing. She especially likes Kurt Vonnegut novels and 20th century history books. Lesley has fenced sabre with the Virginia Fencing Club since 2003 and recently won a bronze medal with the women's sabre team at the 2007 South Atlantic Conference.
This recital is supported by the Charles S. Roberts Scholarship Fund. Established in 2004 by the generosity of Mr. Alan Y. Roberts ('64) and Mrs. Sally G. Roberts, the Charles S. Roberts Scholarship Fund underwrites the private lessons and recital costs for undergraduate music majors giving a recital in their fourth year as part of a distinguished major program in music. The recital is free and open to the public.
