The Oratorio Society of Charlottesville-Albemarle will present its annual holiday concert, Christmas at the Paramount, on Friday, December 22, 2006 at 8:00 p.m. The 90-strong chorus, under the direction of L. Thomas Vining, will be joined by a full professional orchestra. The performance will include Rutter's Magnificat, Telemann's Trumpet Concerto in D and a variety of traditional seasonal music to put you and your entire family in a festive mood.

John Rutter's Magnificat (My Soul Doth Magnify the Lord) is considered his most significant contribution to choral literature. This outstanding composer's unique combination of beautiful melodies, sonorous harmonies, syncopated rhythms and brilliant fanfares are evident throughout this glorious and uplifting work. The music evokes the spirit of the many exuberant festivals held throughout Europe where people celebrate the feast days of the Virgin Mary with singing, dancing and processions. The soprano soloist for the Magnificat will be Rebecca Ewing of Charlottesville.

The Telemann Trumpet Concerto in D will feature internationally acclaimed trumpeter Curt Christensen as guest soloist. Other works to be performed include Morten Lauridsen's haunting O Magnum Mysterium, Mack Wilberg's setting of Away in a Manger and John Rutter's arrangements of What Sweeter Music, Love Came Down at Christmas, and Deck the Halls. The concert will conclude with a rousing rendition of We Wish You A Merry Christmas, to send both audience and performers away with the cheering spirit of the season.

Tickets are available from Plan 9 Music (Albemarle Square), chorus members, and the Paramount box office (tel. 434-979-1333 or
