Night of Percussion with Robert Jospé

UVa Night of Percussion concert featuring UVa Percussion Ensemble directed by I-Jen Fang and guest artist, Robert Jospé. Jospé will perform as the drumset soloist with the UVa Percussion Ensemble on "Suite for Solo Drum Set and Percussion Ensemble" by David Mancini. He will also perform a drumset duet with Christopher Garay and will be collaborating with I-Jen Fang on a vibe and drumset duo.
Drummer, percussionist and composer Robert Jospé is known for his inventive use of rhythmic styles incorporating salsa, samba, swing, funk and African rhythms into a unique and distinctive style of contemporary jazz.
After attending New York University Jospé became an active player in the New York jazz and rock scene. He studied with Tony Williams and Bob Moses and performed with Michael Brecker, Dave Liebman, John Schofield and John Abercrombie. In 1981 Jospé, as co-leader of the fusion band Cosmology, moved to Charlottesville, Virginia. In 1990 Jospé released his first CD as a leader and formed his own group "Inner Rhythm." Since 1992 he has received an annual touring grant from the Virginia Commission for the Arts for Inner Rhythm and The World Beat Workshop. Inner Rhythm performs nationally for concerts and festivals and The World Beat Workshop has been presented in hundreds of schools, libraries, and festivals. Jospé joined the University of Virginia's music department's performance faculty in 1989. Jospé teaches jazz drumming and is a member of UVA's faculty jazz ensemble, The Free Bridge Quintet.
In 2006 Random Chance Records released, Heart Beat, Jospé's fifth CD as leader and the second on the label. Hands On was released in 2004. Hands On and Time to Play reached number four on Jazz Week, the national radio play chart. Time to Play and Blue Blaze received four stars in Downbeat Magazine.
Jospé was featured in Jazz Times Magazine in 2004 and in Modern Drummer Magazine in 2003.
Members of the ensemble are Ryan Bird, Ben Cooper, Sarah-Morgan Ferrell, Maximilian Frantz, Christopher Garay, William Hubel, Jennifer Johnson, Stephen Johnson, Christopher Kennedy, Evan Monez, Daniel Pyon, Veronica Tornini, and Robert Wiederecht.
This concert will feature works by John Cage, Chick Corea, Claude Debussy, Brett Dietz, Mark Ford, Yo Goto, Robert Jospé, David Mancini, and Steve Reich.
The Percussion Ensemble is a chamber ensemble that performs literature from classical transcriptions to contemporary music. The ensemble draws upon a large family of pitched and non-pitched percussion instruments and number of players and the amount of equipment varies greatly from piece to piece.
