David Sariti Violin Recital
Thursday, February 22nd, 2007, 8:00pm - Old Cabell Hall
The McIntire Department of Music at the University of Virginia will present a faculty recital by violinist David Sariti, assisted by pianist Mary Kathleen Ernst. The program will include J.S. Bach's Partita No. 1 in B minor for Unaccompanied Violin, the world premiere of "Variations for Violin and Piano" by Rochester, NY-based composer Kenneth Kreuzer, and the Sonata No. 3 in D minor of Johannes Brahms.
Bach's Six Sonatas and Partitas for Unaccompanied Violin have become a cornerstone of the repertoire, the Partita No. 1 dazzles us with seemingly inexhaustible musical invention. Consisting of four dance movements, each paired with a double that masterfully elaborates, this is Bach at his contemplative best.
Kenneth Kreuzer's "Variations for Violin and Piano", presented here in its world premiere, offers a modern take on a centuries-old form. A set of eight concise movements, it is tightly constructed around a lyrical theme which provides diverse variations from the light-hearted to the poignant.
Brahms' D Minor Violin Sonata is the work of a mature composer at the full height of his powers. Full of dramatic tension and lush melodies, this is a duo work on a symphonic scale, demanding much of both violinist and pianist and providing a thrilling conclusion to the program.
Dr. Sariti joined the UVa faculty in 2005, performing in the Rivanna Quartet and as Principal Second Violinist of the Charlottesville Symphony. Active as a recitalist and chamber collaborator on both modern and period instruments, he has recently appeared in recital at Monticello's Center for Jefferson Studies, James Madison University, and Virginia Commonwealth University. He has taught violin and music history at the Hartt School (Hartford, CT), and published in the areas of musicology and pedagogy.
