The newly-reestablished Rivanna Quartet closes this season's Chamber Music Series with an exciting and varied program. The concert takes place on Thursday, April 26th at 8pm in Old Cabell Hall.

The program opens with Haydn's "Bird" quartet, a fine way to usher in spring with its playful bird calls and effervescent textures. Mendellsohn's sixth and final string quartet, one of the last works to be completed by the composer, offers a marked contrast: dark and brooding, it is a side of Mendellsohn not often encountered. Special guests Mimi Tung and Nancy Garlick join Rivanna member Iris Jortner for a performances of Beethoven's memorable Clarinet Trio, and the program will close with the splashy Third String Quartet of Villa Lobos, in which classical string quartet techniques are married with a Brazilian flair.

Tickets for the concert are $20 for adults, $10 for students, 5ARTS$ for UVA Students. Tickets are free for those under 18. Tickets can be purchased by calling the Cabell Hall Box Office at 434.924.3984. The box office is open noon to 5pm on weekdays and two hours prior to the concert.

The Rivanna Quartet is composed of:

  • David Colwell, violin
  • David Sariti, violin
  • Johanna Beaver, viola
  • Iris Jortner, violoncello
