Michael Slon, Conductor
The Charlottesville and University Symphony Orchestra with the University Singers, present their third annual holiday concerts, a compilation of seasonal favorites with pieces for orchestra and chorus. The University Singers, UVA's premiere vocal group, will join the orchestra as will well-known jazz trumpeter John D'earth and local actor Doug Schneider. Conductor Michael Slon will lead the concert. Due to popular demand there are two performances again this year. The first is on Saturday, December 1 at 8:00pm, and the second is on Sunday, December 2 at 3:30pm.
Narrating The Night Before Christmas is local actor and singer Doug Schneider who has performed in many productions in the Charlottesville area. Most recently he was seen as Vanya in the Hamner Theater's production of Uncle Vanya and as Bill Ruffin in the world premiere of a new play at the Wintergreen Music Festival, A Shadow of Honor. In August of this year he was voted "Best Actor in Cville" by the readers of The C-ville Weekly.
Performing the incomparable Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire) with the orchestra will be jazz trumpeter John D'earth. D'earth is co-founder of the Free Bridge Quintet, music director for the Thompson D'earth Band with his wife Dawn Thompson, leads the Charlottesville Swing Orchestra, the jazz/poetry project and his own quartet/quintet. As the Director of Jazz Performance at UVA, D'earth also teaches improvisation, jazz trumpet and directs the UVA Jazz Ensemble.
The concert is expected to draw many students and families. The wide selection of festive and familiar music is very upbeat and audience-friendly. The groups will also perform over a dozen short works including Leroy Anderson's classic "Sleigh Ride," George Frideric Handel's moving "Hallelujah" chorus from the Messiah, and the festive "Twelve Days of Christmas." These concerts are sure to put anyone in a great mood for the holidays!
