Opera Viva will present an entire student cast in Giacomo Pucciniís comic one-act opera Gianni Schicchi. Performances will be held April 11 and 12 at 8:00 PM and April 13 at 1:00 PM at the Maury Hall Auditorium, Room 209. Tickets are free and available at the Newcomb Hall Box Office.

Opera Viva, the nationís only undergraduate-run opera company, will present Giaccomo Puccini's one-act opera Gianni Schicchi this April, under the stage direction of Richard Block and the baton of Haley Anderson. The production is entirely student-run, and many of the talented cast and crew have participated in Opera Viva's successful production of Gilbert and Sullivan's The Pirates of Penzance. The opera will be performed predominantly in English translation, with some text remaining in the original Italian.

About Gianni Schicchi

Puccini's opera, based on a brief passage in Dante's Inferno, tells of a rich Florentine nobleman, Buoso Donati, who dies in bed, leaving all his wealth to a local monastery. His avaricious family members, hoping for a share in the inheritance, call upon the clever Gianni Schicchi to forge a new copy of his will. Schicchi, however, after accepting bribes from each family member, grants almost all of the money to himself, leaving the greedy Donati clan penniless. Instead, he gives the money to his daughter as a dowry, so that she can be free to marry her lover, Rinuccio. Opera Viva has moved the story out of its 14th Century Italian setting and relocated it to the present era.
