The Virginia Women’s Chorus is working hard as the dates of its annual spring concerts near. The forty-two-member group, directed by KaeRenae Mitchell, has an exciting program to present; entitled “Frabjous Songs of Spring,” inspired both by the bizarre poem by Lewis Carroll and a piece in the concert lineup called “Jabberywocky,” the two concerts will celebrate through song the fresh beauty of the new season.

Well-balanced in its fun and more serious selections, the program showcases the variety the VWC is known for. Going along with the Lewis Carroll theme, headlining the concerts are the three choruses from Irving Fine’s Alice in Wonderland Suite. The pieces are bright, upbeat, and definitely silly—perfect for a lighthearted spring day. Songs like “In the Beginning” and “Dirait-on,” both slower and wonderfully melodic, are ideal selections for the female chorus.

Held April 18th at 8:00 pm and April 19th at 3:00 pm at Thomas Jefferson Memorial Church in Charlottesville, Virginia, the Virginia Women’s Chorus’ 2008 spring concerts are bound to be a treat. Ms. Mitchell and her young ladies have worked hard to present a program that is various in many respects. Different languages, tempos, styles—these women do it all. So come out and see for yourself—and don’t pass up the chance to celebrate the season with beautiful music!
