Visiting Lecturers and Artists

The music department hosts a regular lecture series for visiting scholars, composers, and performers, as well as residencies for composers and new music ensembles. The university as a whole hosts numerous speakers and symposia each year in the arts, sciences, and humanities. Concert series and special events bring a wide variety of classical, jazz, popular, and non-Western performers to campus and the community.

Performance

The music department encourages graduate students to integrate performance into their academic study. Over thirty artist faculty offer instrumental and vocal lessons, and students may participate in ensembles dedicated to jazz, African music and dance, early music, new music, and bluegrass, as well as the university orchestra, band, and choral groups. The lively Charlottesville music scene affords numerous additional opportunities to perform classical, popular, and non-Western music.
