As a volunteer or intern for the McIntire Department of Music you will meet and work with people who bring unique gifts and enthusiasm to their work. Our volunteers, interns and student workers come from many diverse occupations and backgrounds and are pursuing different goals , but they share a common interest in music and an appreciation for the many programs that are produced by the McIntire Department of Music.

Volunteer and intern positions are a challenging, yet rewarding experience -- in personal, professional and intellectual growth. Volunteer and Internship opportunities are available for regular assignments as well as on-call opportunities for special events such as concerts, lectures, fundraisers and receptions. UVA work-study students must be available for a minimum of ten regular hours/week.

Administrative Services

Perform various tasks such as answering phones, stuffing envelopes, and computer data entry. Flexible or regular hours and on-call opportunities; Depending on the assignment, a pleasant telephone manner and good hand-writing may be necessary.

Event Planning & Implementing

Assists in the planning and implementation of, or on-site coordination at: member concerts, events in the community, receptions, student appearances and other types of department-sponsored special events. Must be well organized, able to work independently and be detail oriented and enjoy interacting with the public.

Event Ushering

Create a welcome and safe environment for our patrons.  Tear tickets, distribute program, direct patrons, assist with any unforeseen issues. Must have neat appearance, pleasant and patient demeanor and enjoy interacting with the public.

 Outreach and Education

Prepare material related to music department programming and other initiatives for use in school, for community organizations, or as resources to individuals. Help in the distribution of materials. Must have excellent organizational, verbal and written communications skills, be accurate, able to work independently and be familiar with computer word processing software.

Photography

Takes photographs at rehearsals, concerts and events both at Old Cabell Hall and at other venues around Charlottesville.  Archive and catalog photographs.  Manipulate photographs using computer programs.  Must be well organized, able to work independently and be familiar with digital cameras and computer software.

Production

Record music or public affairs material at pre-selected locations in the Charlottesville area; assist with audio editing of material for broadcast. Must have own transportation, be punctual, good interpersonal skills and well organized. Knowledge of radio/field recording techniques desirable.

Programming and Audience Services

Provide assistance to concert contact and Director of Promotions, researching artist/music information; copy write public service announcements, answer e-mail questions about the concerts, music programs and related information. Must have a pleasant telephone manner, enjoy interacting with the public and be well organized.

Promotions

Writes copy for press releases, newspaper articles and/or promotional announcements. Designs and creates flyers, posters and ads. Must have excellent written communications skills and be familiar with/willing to learn computer word processing and/or computer graphics.

Flyering and Promotions Distribution

Distributes calendars, brochures and flyers throughout the Charlottesville area and surrounding communities. Enjoy exploring the rich Charlottesville area, while helping to publicize and promote events and activities in Old Cabell Hall. Flyers and promotions material will be distributed throughout local schools (including the University grounds), local shops and businesses, restaurants and a variety of other locations. Must have own transportation, enjoy interacting with the public, and be able to work independently.
