Entrepreneurship and Commercialization

Partnership with Darden

The nanoSTAR Institute is an inter-disciplinary center encompassing faculty and programs from five schools at the University. Beyond the nanoSTAR Partnership and Innovation Program (PIP) designed to facilitate and promote industrial interactions, resources at the Darden School of Business help us foster the commercialization of discoveries made by our researchers. Activities include an annual business concept competition, the Darden Business Incubator, an internship program, as well as networking opportunities.

Darden Business Incubator

The Darden Business Incubator is primarily intended to support Darden MBA students who are interested in developing promising early-stage business ventures. The nanoSTAR Institute will help identify and recommend suitable  projects for this program..

The Incubator’s main focus is to:

  • foster the formation and development of start-up businesses to the point of obtaining significant, third-party investment support;
  • educate participants about the process of new venture development to improve their potential for future entrepreneurial success; and,
  • create an entrepreneurial community to give students the experience of learning through mutual support, a process critical for successful entrepreneurship.

Batten Venture Internship Program (BVIP)

The Batten Venture Internship Program was established to create an opportunity for Darden students to pursue summer internships with venture capital firms, their portfolio companies, and early stage companies. Companies benefit from having access to talented MBA students for the summer.

Qualifying companies:
The focus is on VC firms, venture-backed portfolio companies and early stage companies. However, other opportunities may be considered.  Interested members of the nanoSTAR PIP should contact nanostar@virginia.edu for more information.

Networking:

  • EVC -The Entrepreneurship & Venture Capital Club at Darden (EVC) serves as a focal point for students and alumni interested in accessing the various entrepreneurial avenues available in the Charlottesville community and Mid-Atlantic region. A single club represents both disciplines because they work so closely together – entrepreneurs work with venture capitalists to secure funding, while VCs work with entrepreneurs to find promising investment opportunities.

  • E*Society -

    The E*Society is a University of Virginia group whose mission is to assemble, connect, and empower UVA-affiliated entrepreneurs. Beginning with a vibrant culture, the E*Society will tie together an entrepreneurial ecosystem including students, alumni, researchers & professors, local business groups, venture capitalists & angels, UVA administrators, and local entrepreneurs. Their goal is to dramatically increase the flow of successful businesses started by those from the UVA community.
