The
Virginia 2020 program was created by President Casteen to assemble
a corps of younger alumni whose leadership and generosity are likely
to make a significant impact on the University well into the next
century.
The
program is built around an intimate weekend retreat with the President,
involving fewer than 20 alumni and their spouses/guests. In general,
alumni are drawn from the classes of the past 25 years in the University's
undergraduate and professional schools. The purpose of the retreat
is to encourage participants to develop a vision for the University
in the coming decades and to devise possible strategies for fulfilling
this vision over time. Guided by a facilitator, the discussions
inform the President's strategic planning efforts and help him to
identify the interests and concerns of the University's future leadership.
Questions
discussed in the retreats include the following:
 |
Where
do we want the University to be in the year 2020, and how do
we get there? |
 |
 |
How
can we begin developing the characteristics that will define
our academic and student life programs in the coming decades? |
 |
 |
What
makes the University experience so special, and how do we preserve
its unique character as we broaden the University's reach and
raise its stature? |
 |
 |
How
should we best communicate the University's unique identity
to alumni, friends, and the public? |
Those
invited to the retreat weekends are distinguished members of the
University family - alumni and friends who have shown a dedication
to the institution by contributing both time and financial resources
to advance its programs.
The
first Virginia 2020 session was held in March 1998 in Arizona. Additional
retreats have been, and will continue to be, held each semester
in locations that are conducive to free-flowing discussion and that
offer attractive recreational opportunities for participants.
