Reverend Irene Monroe

The LGBT Resource Center and Kaleidoscope invited Rev. Irene Monroe of Harvard Seminary to present: Querying Our Right to Love:God, Religion, and Sexual Orientation. Rev. Irene Monroe is a religion columnist, public theologian, and speaker. As an African American feminist theologian, she speaks for a sector of society that is frequently invisible. Over 100 students and faculty joined Monroe in a lively dialogue about religion and sexuality. Suburban Sahibs Mix

The South Asian Leadership Society invited Washington Post reporter and author S. Mitra Kalita to hold a book reading and discussion. SALS President, Neela Pal introduced Ms. Kalita. Throughout the evening, she shared her research on South Asian American identity, immigration and assimilation, and the changing face of the American suburbs. Many students of South Asian background as well as others interested in the region came to the event. The night was complete with samosas and tea. Diversity Initiatives, Student Council

As one of the five presidential committees run by Student Council, Diversity Initiatives holds regular meetings open to the student body. At this meeting, committee members discussed the newly released diversity report.

Hillel-Queer Student Union Mix

Members of the Jewish student organization on Grounds, Hillel, and QSU discussed challenges and opportunities that both groups experience at UVA. The upcoming presidential election also served as a hot topic of discussion between the two groups. Over 20 studentsattended including Hillel President, Abby Bell and QSU President, Adrienne Patton.
