Hello new Wahoos! My name is Alyse Alicandro. I'm a rising fourth year in the College of Arts and Sciences, studying government and media studies. I am from Arlington, Virginia. I transferred from Virginia Tech after my second year. I couldn’t of asked for a better transition between universities—UVA is everything I have ever wanted in a university. I’m lucky I got to transfer sorority chapters because I already had approximately a hundred new friends waiting for me at UVA. Along with being a Zeta Tau Alpha sister, I am involved in Take Back the Night, Pause 4 Paws, the Monroe Society, and Madison House volunteering. The first half of my summer I’ll be studying abroad in Italy learning photography! I urge you to set goals for your upcoming semester and take risks every once in a while. Welcome to the best university in the nation! I can’t wait to meet you all!
Hey Hoos. My name is Hadeel Alwani. I’m a rising fourth year Cognitive Science major with a concentration in Neuroscience. I just transferred to UVA in the fall of 2012 from George Mason University. I’ve had the unique experience of transferring twice, after having spent the equivalent of my first year abroad at King Saud University in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. So if you have any questions about adjusting, I’m the person to talk to. I am also on the pre-med track and got involved with undergraduate research my first semester at UVA. and I am also secretary of GEMS (Girls Excited about Math and Science). I love to travel and I studied abroad in St. Kitts and Nevis in the Caribbean over J-term and would recommend any study abroad experience to anyone. I’m also a member of the MSA (Muslim Students Association) here. I love the outdoors: mainly hiking and camping, when I get the chance to. Adjusting to college life is difficult and I thought I was above these burdens, but when you get here you’ll understand. It’s a balancing act, and the trick is to prioritize and learn where your limits are. It’s a process and we are all still learning, even as fourth years. That’s where we come in: for questions, support, and to just let you know what we would have done in your situation.
Exhale- you’ve made the right decision for choosing UVa. My name is Ruoxi Cao, and I’m a rising third-year student at the College of Arts & Sciences- here to acclimate you ridiculously brilliant students to life on-grounds. When I was a newly minted transfer student from James Madison University, my favourite activities included getting lost in Charlottesville in the august heat and finding obscure study spaces with ample outlet sockets. Imagine all the glorious adventures that await you! My main aspiration is to get my MBA and PhD, but to understand football is a close second. Mostly, I enjoy ritualizing afternoon tea and jamming to jam-worthy music. Naturally, I look forward to knowing you all and answering any questions. E-mail! Meet-up! Let’s start the year off right.
Hey Hey Hey! My name is Dejah Carter and I am so hyped to welcome you to the University of Virginia. I am a rising Fourth year who transferred to UVA as a third year from Tidewater Community College. I'm a History major and African American Studies minor. So I 'm guessing since you got into UVA you're feeling pretty fancy, huh? Well, you should be because transfers are the fanciest of the fancy, the hottest of the hot, and the HOOest of the HOOS and don't ever forget it! As a transfer student, you are going to have ups and downs but do not fear because I will right there with you as you find your place here at UVA. I am always looking to make great friends so never feel too awkward to contact me for anything whether it’s for picking classes or having dinner!
Congratulations on UVA everyone! My name is Julia Carter and I am a rising fourth year from Glastonbury, Connecticut. Before coming to UVA I attended Boston University but am so happy to now be a Wahoo. Along with being part of TSPA, I am involved with Madison House, Alternative Spring Breaks and am in the sorority Alpha Phi. I can't wait to meet all of you and always feel free to contact me!
Hey guys, welcome to UVa. My name is Ben Colalillo and I am a third year from Stockton, New Jersey. I am really excited to help welcome you guys to the UVa community and am looking forward to getting to know all of you. I am a Government major and enjoy hanging out with friends and talking politics, movies, music, and sports, skiing, playing golf, and reading— preferably on the beach. I am really involved with Class Council and encourage you all to apply. Transferring can be tough but it is important to dive right in and get yourself lost in all that C’ville and the University have to offer. Shoot me an email if you have any questions, I’ll be in touch. Have a great summer. Get some beach-time in.
Congratulation and Welcome to UVA! My name is Gabriela Ehrman and I am a rising fourth year majoring in Foreign Affairs and economics minor. I transferred last year from Marist College – Florence (Italy) Campus. I don’t regret my decision of coming here, I absolutely love this university and I am sure also going to love it. There are so many things to do on grounds; so many ways to get involved in the community and hundreds of club and organizations you can join. If you have any doubts about your major, classes, transfer courses, or housing, I will be happy to help you with any of these things. I participate in the organization Towards A Better Latin America. If you are interested in Latin America and/or interested in meeting Latin American students this is the right place! I am so happy you are coming and I can’t to meet you!
Congratulations, and welcome to UVA! My name is Matt Fiedelholtz, and I am a rising fourth-year, majoring in Economics with a concentration in International Economics. I’m from Rockville, MD and I transferred to Virginia during the fall of my second-year from Kenyon College in Gambier, OH. I’m a big sports fan and am currently involved with Hoos for Obama as well as the Economics Club as a tutor. As I’m sure you all will come to know, UVA is an amazing place filled with opportunities for everyone to take advantage of. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact me at any time. I look forward to meeting all of you!
Hey everyone! Welcome to the University of Virginia!! My name is Klara Luisa Franco but people call me Kiki and I am a rising third year from Charlottesville. I transferred from the Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA. I hope you are as excited as I was to become a Hoo!! This is going to be an amazing transition and you will love every minute of it. I am a student in the School of Nursing and I am involved in many nursing specific clubs like Nursing Students Without Boarders. Since I was born and raised in Charlottesville I can be your number one source for information on all things “Cville.” I love this beautiful city and this incredible school and I hope you will come to share this passion with me one day! Congratulations on your acceptance and know that I am here to guide you through this transition in anyway you need. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions. GO HOOS!!
Welcome to UVA! My name is Colleen Garrott and I’m a rising fourth year majoring in Psychology with a minor in Sociology. I’m originally from Burke, Virginia and before coming to UVA I attended Washington & Lee University as well as Northern VA Community College. After transferring two times in three years, I’ve found a home at UVA and I know you’ll come to love it as much as I do. On grounds, I’m a senior staff writer for the Cavalier Daily, a Language Consultant for VISAS, and a member of multiple IM sports teams. Also, Charlottesville is a great city with tons of shows, exhibits, and restaurants to enjoy as well as many excellent options for outdoor activities like camping and hiking. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me; I can’t wait to get to know you. Wahoowa!
Welcome to UVa, fellow Wahoos! My name is Carly Gordon and I transferred from the College of William and Mary to Northern Virginia Community College and have finally found my home in Charlottesville. I am a third year majoring in Spanish and minoring in Global Sustainability, but I have interests in many different fields of study. The way I found my place at UVa was by immersing myself into a variety different activities including volunteering with Madison House (the volunteer center here), acting as a student representative in the Office of Admissions, getting involved in Greek life, baking with Challah for Hunger, and holding a position on my area council. I could not be happier with my decision to transfer to the University of Virginia and can’t wait for you to feel the same way! I can’t wait to meet y’all and PLEASE contact me with any questions you have!!
My fellow transfer students, congratulations on being accepted to The University of Virginia (AKA the world’s greatest school)! My name is Thomas Gresham and I transferred here from John Tyler Community College. I am a rising fourth year Mechanical Engineering student. A year ago I was going through a process very similar to what you are experiencing right now. When I decided to transfer from my community college to a four-year school I was very anxious about choosing the right fit. One year later I can honestly say that I made the right choice; I could not imagine having gone anywhere else. I truly believe that the best person for a student to seek advice from is another student. That is why I encourage all my transfer friends to seek out other transfer students for help. Cant wait to meet each of you!
Congratulations on your acceptance! I guarantee you'll be glad you made the decision to come to UVA. I've been a student here since 2010 and haven't regretted my choice for a single moment. If there's anything about which you have questions or concerns, don't hesitate to contact me! I'm also active in entrepreneurial activities and I love adventuring around Charlottesville. If there's one piece of advice I can give you, it's this: don't be afraid to put yourself out there. Try new clubs/activities and take advantage of every opportunities you can! I look forward to meeting you!
Hey transfers, welcome to UVA! I’m Erin Haas and I’m a rising Third Year majoring in Foreign Affairs and minoring in Media Studies. I’m from Reston, Virginia and I transferred from the College of William & Mary. I had really high hopes transferring to a big school with lots of school spirit, and everything I had hoped for UVA has absolutely come true! There are tons of activities and clubs to get involved in around Grounds and some really great places to explore in Charlottesville, so whether it be sports clubs, community service, outdoors adventures, or something totally random that you’ve never tried before (like sailing!), I’m positive that all of you will find things you love here at UVA. I’ll be studying abroad next Spring and, as much as I will miss being at UVA, I’m incredibly excited about it! I can’t wait to meet all of you!
Congratulations and Welcome to the esteemed University of Virginia, Wahoo. The first thing I can tell you guys (or y'all) is that you have made a great decision, and I am here to help you understand that. I am a rising Third Year in the college, Double Majoring in Economics and French. I hail from the Philadelphia area, a small hamlet called Newtown, and I transferred after my first year at Emory University, with no regrets since. I have made UVA my home with the help of extracurricular involvement. Outside of being a Transfer Peer Advisor, I am a volunteer through Madison House, a member of College Council, a member of a political group, and a member of a fraternity. There are so many different opportunities here, even for us transfer students, believe it or not, so feel free to talk to me more in depth. See you guys soon enough (I'll be the short blond kid, you can't miss me)
Welcome to UVA! I’m Maddie and I’m a rising 4th year, majoring in Sociology. I transferred here after my second year at Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts. I am from Chicago, Illinois but have fallen in love with Charlottesville! I am a member of the Varsity Women’s Rowing Team here at UVA and have made great friends through athletics. In my free time I really enjoy hanging out at The Downtown Mall. I love getting involved with volunteering through athletics and can help direct you to many different organizations! I have taken some really fun and interesting classes while I’ve been at UVA and I know you’ll enjoy your classes as well. UVA has so much to offer, and I absolutely love it here. Anything I can do to help you transition. Don’t hesitate to ask! Welcome, and Go Hoos!
Congratulations transfers and welcome to UVA!!! My name is Retsy Holliday and I am a rising third year tentatively majoring in international affairs and minoring in psychology. Since transferring, I have gotten involved with the Global Development Organization, Amnesty International, and CAVS in the classroom. I will also be a new member of the Club Polo team in fall 2013. I will be studying abroad this summer in Cape Town, South Africa and in Tanzania, as well. I know transferring can seem intimidating but I am here to make your process as smooth and successful as mine was. Congratulations again and go hoos!!
Congratulations and welcome to UVA! My name is Annmarie Irwin and I am a rising fourth year in the engineering school majoring in Mechanical Engineering and Physics. I transferred here last year from the Cornell University. Being a transfer student is difficult, but with the help of me and my friendly TSPA amigos it can also be a ton of fun! The students and faculty that make up UVA are some of the best people I've ever met. Plus there are a ton of awesome clubs and activities to get involved in. I am a part of club cross country and ESTUD community service organization. I hope you are ready for an awesome time! Please contact me if you have any questions or are just looking for someone to talk to about the transferring process. I would love to hear from you!

Welcome to the University of Virginia! My name is Johnny Lane. I’m a rising Fourth Year in the College of Arts and Sciences as an English Major. I’m from Reston, Virginia and transferred from Virginia Tech after my first year. Here on Grounds, I am a member of Phi Sigma Pi, a coeducational Honor fraternity. Beyond that, I will also be apart of Trustees (Fourth Year Council) this upcoming school year. I’m a big Washington D.C. sports fan and love to play basketball, soccer, frisbee, volleyball, and a bunch of others. This summer I’ll be interning with a smaller investment firm called McGinn Investments located in Alexandria, Virginia. Please email me with any questions you may have. I would love to help! Once again, congratulations and welcome to the UVA community! WAHOOWA
Hi all! WELCOME to the BEST SCHOOL in VA! But seriously, UVA has an incredible amount of activities to do and inspiring people to meet. I’m Christina Le, a rising third year in Systems Engineering with a minor in Biomedical Engineering. As a native of Chantilly, Virginia, I transferred here from Northern Virginia Community College and absolutely love life at UVA. While meeting people and cultivating relationships does take time, I’ve been amazingly blessed with the people I’ve met here, from my fellow engineers to my future apartment mates. I highly recommend getting involved with organizations early, like I did with the Society of Women Engineers (enough said), the Virginia Dance Company (one of the best dance groups around grounds), Cru at UVA (a close-knit Christian fellowship), and Musicians on Call (a great opportunity to bless hospital patients with the gift of music). CANNOT wait to meet you guys!
Hey there, and welcome to UVA! I'm a rising third-year from Needham, MA. I transferred to the university after a year in Ohio. I am an English major who wants to go into film production. As you probably guessed, I love movies, especially classics. Being from the Boston area I am also a huge Red Sox fan (so beware those of you who root for the Yankees...), and I never turn down a chance to watch the Celtics. I'm a little car obsessed, and I love driving around with my windows down when it's warm out. I'm super friendly and outgoing and love answering questions about UVA because I feel like it's my second home!! Hopefully you'll grow to be as fond of the university as I am. WAHOOWA!
Hello Everyone! Congratulations on your acceptance and welcome to UVA! My name is Taylor Anne Moffett and I am a rising fourth year in the College of Arts & Sciences. I transferred last fall from Piedmont Virginia Community College. I am currently majoring in Sociology – best major ever! Woot woot! And I am also minoring in Global Culture & Commerce – it’s a “hidden gem” minor! Since starting my amazing adventure at UVA I have joined the sorority “Sigma Delta Tau”; even though I had never previously thought of myself as a sorority girl, it really was one of my best decisions made at UVA yet. I also am involved around grounds in other various clubs such as the Baking Club and Pause4Paws! Now I am really excited to welcome you in as the new transfer class and make you feel right at home here at UVA! If you ever need anything from a friend to a class advisor I am here for you – contact me any time! =)
Congrats on your acceptance to UVA! I promise your journey as a transfer student here will be 100% worthwhile. My name is Jen, I’m a rising third year from CT. I transferred here last fall from the College of Charleston, the best decision I’ve made although I was sad to part from the warm weather and beaches. I am studying Communication Disorders at the Curry School of Education. On grounds aside from being a TSPA, I am the captain and social chair of the women’s club ice hockey team, member of UVa Ambassadors, NSCS, and tutor for America Reads. There are so many opportunities offered for students here! Please feel free to facebook/email me with any questions you have, I’m happy to help. Welcome, and I can’t wait to meet you in the Fall!
Hey everyone, welcome to UVA! My name is Olivia Oldenburg and I am a rising Fourth Year majoring in English and minoring in Media Studies. I hail from Luray, Virginia (Luray Caverns, anyone?) and I transferred from Lord Fairfax Community College. Although the transfer process can be hectic at times, there’s nowhere I’d rather be than UVA! On Grounds I’m involved in VISAS, The Cavalier Daily, and Chi Alpha Christian Fellowship, but I’m also looking forward to the opportunities this next year will bring. If you can’t find me curled up with a good book at Para Coffee, feel free to contact me if you have any questions/concerns/good jokes (you get the idea). Have a great summer and I’ll see you all in August!
Congrats, and welcome to the University of Virginia! My name is Stephanie Renn, and I am a rising Third Year from Rumson, New Jersey. I transferred to UVA last fall after attending Virginia Tech for a year. I am majoring in Biology, although I have interest in Environmental Sciences, and I’m considering going to veterinary school after I graduate. Transferring to UVA was definitely the right choice for me; I love it here! UVA offers so many opportunities, and getting involved is really easy. I’m currently involved in numerous activities, such as my sorority, Delta Gamma, and volunteering at a local middle school. Next semester, I plan on gaining independent research experience, working off-campus, continuing my current studies and volunteering, and, of course, becoming one of your Transfer Student Peer Advisors! Feel free to email or Facebook me with any questions, and I look forward to meeting all of you soon!
Welcome to University of Virginia! I am Lauren Scott and I hope I can be helpful to you as you come to be a part of this crazy wonderful place. I am from outside of Philadelphia and I am not actually a transfer myself, but have many friends undergoing the process so I have a decent idea of how it will go. I am in the A school here and that takes up most of my time and energy, but in my free time I like to go grab lunch at the Corner or sunbathe on Hereford Hill. I am so excited to welcome you to UVA, and congrats on your acceptance! If you ever need anything let me know. I can't wait to hear about you as you make friends, have adventures, and learn what it means to be a Hoo.
Welcome to UVA and congratulations on your acceptance! My name is John Searight and I’m a rising third year. I transferred here after my first year at Lehigh University. I grew up outside of Boston before moving to Northern Virginia in 8th grade, where I attended Langley High School. I am currently planning on majoring in Media Studies and Politics, and I’m also very familiar with the McIntire School of Commerce. Other than that, I joined the Sigma Chi Fraternity here and I also have a job with Cavalier Connect. I’m looking forward to meeting all of you; it seems like just yesterday I felt completely lost coming to Grounds! I hope to show all of you a good time and help you to get accustomed to all of the great things that UVA has to offer. I’d love to hear from you over the summer so feel free contact me on Facebook or shoot me an email, whichever is easiest.
Congratulations and welcome to the UVA family. My name is Ben Shapero and I am a rising 3rd year Economics major from Great Falls, VA. I transferred from Wake Forest University after an amazing first year looking for a chance to get out of my comfort zone and challenge myself. Since my arrival I have immersed myself in organizations such as Madison House and Campus Kitchen. I enjoy running through the beautiful city of Charlottesville and hanging out on the corner with friends. I look forward to meeting all of you and providing any support needed. Go HOO’s!
Welcome and congrats! I'm Sydney, a rising Third Year double majoring in Urban and Environmental Planning and American Politics. I transferred from Rappahannock Community College (kudos to whoever knows where that is!), so if you have any concerns about or would like advice on transferring from a small community college, I'm your girl! Outside of class, I help organize and facilitate inter-university dialogues through Sustained Dialogue and Dialogue Across UVA (both FANTASTIC ways for incoming transfers to learn more about their new community here at UVA and share your unique perspective). I also am a program director for Madison House and am involved with First Year Players and United for Undergraduate Socioeconomic Diversity. There are about a zillion different ways to enjoy and make the most of your time at UVA, and I’m so looking forward to helping you all have the most wonderful time possible in your first semesters and beyond.
Hey Everyone! My name is Michael Starr; I am a rising fourth year from Charlotte, North Carolina studying aerospace engineering, and minoring in engineering business. As a second year transfer, I was definitely nervous about integrating into a larger community where I knew almost no one, but for me, coming to UVA has been the best decision I have ever made. Aside from class, I am involved with the University Guide Service, Alpha Phi Omega service organization, and the club frisbee team. There is SO SO much to do here at UVA and in Charlottesville, so get excited!
My name is Bridget Stock and I am a rising Fourth Year from Connecticut. I transferred from Complutense University in Madrid, Spain. Complutense is more than 4 times the size of UVa and all of my classes were in Spanish, so I can definitely help you transition even from the most different of circumstances! I am studying Public Policy and Leadership in the Batten School and I also have completed a minor in Business Spanish. Around Grounds, I am a Program Director for the Migrant and Latino Aid program at Madison House, a representative on the Judicial Board of the Inter Sorority Council, and a member of the Delta Gamma sorority. I am also involved in the global community at UVa so if you’re interested in studying abroad, living at the IRC or any of the language houses, or just meeting international students, I can be a great resource to you! Congratulations again and get excited for the incredible journey that awaits you! Go Hoos!
Hey everyone and welcome to UVA! First of all let me say congratulations on getting accepted into the best school in the world (in my opinion at least). My name is Philip and I am a rising third year chemistry major from Mclean, Virginia. I love cycling and running and am currently training with the tri-club in the hopes of running my first triathlon this summer. I transferred here last year from Colgate University in Hamilton, NY and am here to answer any questions about UVA you might have. Although I am sure the transfer process seems daunting at this point, I will happily work with you to make the transition as seamless as possible. Please don’t hesitate to contact me at any point during the summer or school year for guidance or just to say hello! Have a great summer and I look forward to meeting you guys soon!
Hey hey errybody! First and foremost: congrats Congrats CONGRATS! I am Mehrangaiz (pronounce it like the dance, merengue but with a z), a rising forth-year and transfer student from NVCC. Let me tell you guys now: DON’T STRESS about transferring because I will bet my favorite fuzzy socks that you will love UVa the moment you get here and will wish you could be a student here FOEVER. I am here with the sole purpose of helping ya’ll have the most amazing experience and the easiest transition. So I am majoring in Political Philosophy, Policy and Law (sounds fancy schmancy right, but PPL for short) and am now in Batten School’s accelerated BA/MA program (an extra year here. YAY!). Please contact me about ANY question you have over the summer, I mean ANY. I am very very excited to meet you guys.
Hi! I’m Danielle Twaalfhoven, a rising fourth year in the College of Arts and Sciences. I’m majoring in Political Philosophy, Policy, and Law, which is a small inter-disciplinary major (and the best decision I have since coming to UVa!). I was born and raised in the Netherlands but decided to come to the U.S. for college. So far I have loved every moment of it, and I am sure you will as well! The diverse student body and vast amount of activities and classes that UVa has to offer contribute to making each passing day even more interesting than the last. Everywhere you go the beautiful architecture and grounds surround you. Every person you meet has a fascinating story to tell that will keep you enthralled up until the last word. Not a day goes by in which I learn something new, and I hope you will come to love this special place as much as I do.
First of all, congratulations on your acceptance to UVA! Take a deep breath and bask in the glory of all your hard work paying off. My name is Jay Varela. I am a rising fourth year in the College of Arts and Sciences studying Psychology. I will be doing a pre-medical post-baccalaureate here at UVA and then hopefully off to medical school. I am deeply involved with Madison House (our on grounds volunteer organization) and will be a program director next year for Playing ACES. I will also be doing a Distinguished Majors Program which means I will be conducting my own research and writing an Undergraduate Thesis. Lastly, here are some things to look forward to: awesome professors, dumplings, Para Coffee, Greek life (if you’re into that), Block Party, concerts, football games, and for whatever else floats your boat – UVA and Charlottesville have got it.
Hello. My name is Brian Wilson. I grew up in the most exciting part of Virginia, the southwest, right under the shadow of the great Bristol Motor Speedway. I am a big fan of NASCAR and I have been to multiple races at Bristol. After graduation from high school in 2013, I was planning on attending the University of Oklahoma. However, financial issues arose and I decided to attend Virginia Highlands Community College for one year. After that year, I obtained an associate degree in general studies and science. Upon arrival at UVa, I was set on being a biology major. That completely changed after one semester. Currently, I am an American Government major looking to attend law school after graduation.
Congratulations, Wahoos! You’ve made the right choice. My name is Brendan Wynn, and I’m a rising 4th year studying Government and Psychology. I moved from my hometown of Norfolk, Virginia to Charlottesville in 2009, and it’s been pretty cool. I’ve been involved with a number of clubs and organizations on Grounds, from University Democrats AND College Republicans (crazy, right?) to music ensembles to volunteering all over Charlottesville with Madison House. The point is: there are so many ways to get involved at UVA and you’ll love life here even better for it! I’m here to help you, so shoot me an email with any questions you have about classes, SIS, student activities, you name it! Welcome to the dear old U.Va—you’re going to love it!
Hey Transfers! Congrats and welcome! I’m Mariam Yaktieen, a rising 3rd year studying Biology. I myself am a transfer student having transferred from the University of California San Diego but originally from Virginia! I am well aware of the mixture of excitement, nervousness, anxiousness, and all the other emotions bottled up inside you might be experiencing. Have no fear the TSPAs are here! We’ll help you out! Having transferred mid-year, the transition wasn’t necessarily a walk in the park but in all honesty I was able to reach a comfort level much sooner than I expected because of the amazing environment UVA offers. I’m a member of SPJP, ASO, and planning on adding some more next semester! I’m a food, animal, comedy movie-loving fanatic. I’m a nerd at heart and proud of it. I absolutely love meeting new people and helping people. Please feel free to contact me with ANY questions!
My name’s Ashley, and I’m a second-year French major here at UVa. Welcome! I’m here as a resource and as a friend to help you make the most of your time here. With over 15,000 undergraduates, there’s bound to be at least one club or organization that you can bond and grow with. I’m currently involved in Asian InterVarsity, the Peer Advising Family Network (PAFN), the Tae-kwon-do Club at UVa, VISAS, and the International Buddy Program. I love giving tours, going on walks and hikes, and hanging out with new people. Keep in touch!
