Session L (August 20-22)

Wednesday, August 20

Aquatic and Fitness Center (AFC)
Students will sign in, have their student ID photos taken, pick up Orientation materials and academic information, and then move directly into their assigned housing.

A representative from the Board of Visitors and the Vice President and Chief Student Affairs Officer will discuss enduring traditions and new initiatives at the University of Virginia. The Director of Orientation and New Student Programs will give a brief overview of the Summer Orientation program.

An academic dean and Orientation Leaders will answer questions about adding and dropping courses, signing up for classes, and other general course registration issues.  This session will benefit all students, including those who have already begun the course selection process.

Life as an Undergraduate International Student at U.Va.
Newcomb Hall Ballroom

Orientation Leaders and members of the Mentoring and International eXchange Program (MIX) will cover cultural adjustment, classroom etiquette, peer relationships, and social activities.

Individual Faculty Offices
Students will bring their course selections to Thornton Hall A-122 and have their schedules entered into the course registration system during their assigned registration times.

A World of Possibilities: Academic Opportunities at U.Va.
Newcomb Hall Ballroom
The University offers a rich menu of opportunities outside of the academic year and beyond Charlottesville through January Term, Study Abroad, Semester at Sea, Summer Session, the Center for Undergraduate Research, and the University Internship Program. Students will learn how to get the most out of their U.Va. experience.

Joining the U.Va. Community
Newcomb Hall Theater
New students will meet with Orientation Leaders in an informal setting. Discussion will focus on their rights and responsibilities as members of the community of trust, elements of student self-governance, and opportunities for involvement.

11am-12noon

Student Life at U.Va.
Newcomb Hall Theater
Students will have the chance to ask a panel of Orientation Leaders questions about acclimating to student life at U.Va.

12noon-1pm Lunch

Mandatory Check-In Meeting for International Students with the International Studies Office 
Minor 125                
All international students, of all visa statuses, must attend this session.  Please bring your passport, visa, I-94, and I-20 or DS-2019 (if applicable). This meeting will cover the legal issues concerning your status as an international student studying at U.Va., as well as important aspects of life at the University. Failure to attend will result in a course registration block and potential loss of legal status.

Academic and Student Services Resource Fair

Representatives from a variety of offices, including Student Health, the Office of African-American Affairs, the U.Va. Libraries, University Career Services, the Women’s Center, the U.Va. Parents Committee, and the International Studies Office, will provide information about key student support services and answer questions about academic opportunities available for students.

12:30-1:30pm
 

McIntire School of Commerce (COMM) Information Session for Parents and Students
Rouss and Robertson Hall 120
Attendees will learn about the curricula, courses, and application procedures for students interested in entering the School of Commerce.  (This session, which was also presented at Days on the Lawn in April, is recommended for both interested students and their family members.)

1-2pm

Tour of Classroom Buildings
Meet at the Steps of Old Cabell Hall
Want to find the quickest way to get from class to class in the fall?  Take a tour that focuses on becoming familiar with the classrooms and buildings on the Grounds.

1-3pm

Vaccination Clinic
Newcomb Hall Commonwealth Room
Students can complete their immunization requirements by taking advantage of this immunization clinic. Intravene, a Lynchburg, Virginia, company specializing in immunizations, will offer vaccines during this time.

5-6:30pm
